EBC Brakes Announce NEW High Performance Pads

I’m getting the ST pads and shims installed today. I will be taking a 600 mile road trip this weekend and will provide an update after. Fingers crossed the shims eliminate the noise others have mentioned 🤞.

Update: Pads and titanium shims installed!

OK, I had the pads installed last week. Full disclosure, EBC sent me some shims but the brakes were already installed, missed opportunity by 1 day. Also, the dealer could not resurface my rotors like the tech said they could, so there is that as well. I always have my rotors resurfaced when new pads go on (or rotors replaced if needed). I usually replace my own brakes but the timing just sucked this time around.
My OEM brakes had a lot of meat on them still and the rotors did not have any visible grooves, heat spots or glazing.

Here is my take on the EBC pads so far:
  • They grip really, really good. I ran around some secluded streets testing them doing 80-0 mph
  • I was surprised that the ABS allowed all four wheels to lock up a few times
  • There is a noticeable amount of superior braking capabilities with the EBC pads
  • I caught myself being surprised a few times during normal operation on how quick the pads bit into the rotor and slowed the truck down
  • The pads are loud! Like city-bus type of loud (maybe even louder). I regret not getting the shims sooner and not turning the rotors like planned, because I am sure it would make some difference
Like most high performance brakes, you can expect some noise. Unfortunately, this is just too much for my liking. I am going to get the rotors resurfaced and shims installed and try it again. If they are still too noisy after that, I will look for another solution (OEM?) :(
Thank you for this feedback, I will add it to my spreadsheet and forward on. I do hope that the shims do enough to eliminate the noise to an adequate amount, as you say being performance brakes there will often be some noise but at the looks of it its just far too much!

I will be interested to hear how the guys with the new ED+ formula get on, as these are pads that have not been known to be that noisy (I have some on my SUV and they're silent, even without shims) and the new formula is longer lasting and better friction.

How many miles have you put on the pads so far?

What is the noise-factor on your rig with the shims installed? Scale from 1 - 10.
(Subjective, I know)

I think a compound like porterfields RS-4 compound would help. I am willing to bet the EBC TRX compound is likely based on yellow stuff which are loud, especially in the beginning. It’s like 500 miles and smoking your brakes a ton then they quiet down.

Red stuff compound is much quieter than yellow but still requires quite a bit of effort to properly break them in.

The new ST-Series pads that are being tested are based on our SR-Series race formula which are seeing tremendous results on the track (a place where noise is no issue), and the ED+ pads are a reformulated version of our original Extra Duty pads, but now longer lasting and better friction. Every year we reform and improve our pad formulas, you are right that red will be a quieter compound than yellow but our newest yellow is also much quieter than before and in street conditions makes barely any/ no noise at all in most cases

So I got a set of new rotors coming in, but no pad options except carbotech or ebc which are not quite available yet.... :(

I would defiantly say everypad needs a shim with paste, especially if your brakes have tendency to squeal.

I had ST pads and front shims installed on 22 June and just came back from a 681 mile trip.

My initial 6 day review: The shop did not mention any issues with installation. I noticed an immediate improvement in stopping power. This allowed me to drive more confidently and aggressive knowing the truck can stop quicker. The first 3 days after install I did all suburban/local driving with an empty bed. The pads did squeal pretty loud during this time, but only once you slowed below 10-15 mph. Anything over that they slowed very fast and were silent.

On days 4-6 I loaded the bed with about 600lbs of tools and gear along with my family and we drove to Staten Island NY. The pads performed very well and stop quickly. Again they only squeal at speeds below 10-15 mph, but was annoying (and embarrassing) since the max speed limit on city streets is 30 mph. I agree with other reviewers that it does sound like a garbage truck or bus stopping.

I will be taking the truck to Ocracoke Island this weekend and will put another 600-700 miles on them in hopes they stop squealing. If they do not then I will be removing them after the trip.

Highlights:
1) They stop amazingly well and improved my confidence/aggressiveness and overall enjoyment of the truck.
2) The ST pads with front shims still squeal very loud at speeds below 10-15 mph.
3) The squeal do not happen initially after being parked overnight, but after a few stops they squeal at low speeds again.
4) The ST pads appear to create more brake dust than the factory pads.

With the shims installed they still squeal when coming to a stop and are pretty loud. I would say as loud as a garbage truck and loud enough at traffic lights that people look. Not sure it that helps you or not.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your initial 6 day review, all of this was done with the shims on, correct?
I look forward to hearing how the next 600 miles go for you.

EDIT: sorry i just saw you did mention the shims were installed.

I have since driven 1,400 miles with the ST pads and front shims and while they do stop very quickly and consistent they still make a lot of noise when braking below 10-15 mph. These pads are great for higher speed applications with no brake fade but with minimal stop and go driving. My kids thought a garbage truck was in front of our house when pulling up to my garage. The ST pad compound seems harder than the factory rotors and are wearing the rotors down instead of the pads.

I will be removing them and hopefully will be able to resurface the rotors to put the factory pads back on. I would love to hear from the members that received the ED+ pads on their thoughts and observations.

Great write-up. I changed my pads back to OEM, the noise was just too bad.
If you haven’t changed your pads just yet, can you post some numbers? Can you do a couple 80-0 mph measurements within the performance settings? I wished I would have done a before and after.
The EBC brakes work great, I was able to lock all four wheels up doing some testing (Not that this would be ideal).
But once I put the OEM brakes back on I was severely disappointed. I wanted the EBC’s but without the bus-stop loudness.

My report on rotors and pads with 2,500-ish miles, with and without shims, and lots and lots of brake caliper grease:

Pros:
  1. As others note, stopping power 👍🏻
  2. Installation is simple if you’ve ever done brakes before
  3. The shims are needed and must be greased on both sides, pad metal backing need grease, shims facing calipers need grease
Cons:
  1. Squeal - no matter how much grease you use, they’re going to squeal. High pitched squealing now with shims and grease vs. old school bus/UPS van before adding the shims.
  2. If you don’t have the shims and didn’t grease them forget about doing the install
  3. Before brakes heat up, needs a few brake applications, I notice a strong shimmy that shakes the suspension on first use.

Sorry I was not able to do any brake tests for you before I went back to factory pads. My shop is .5 miles away on a 25 mph road. Like you, I am disappointed in the performance of the factory pads after experiencing the ST pads. But I did not want to drive my truck due to the squeal before so I am back to enjoying my truck again (although not as aggressively as before lol).

After hearing the feedback and my own experience with EBC pads / EBC rotors, where the HD pads wore into the rotor really bad. Braking was great, but not with 3/32" deep wear into each rotor with just 40K miles of use.

I will keep waiting on a more affordable rotor / caliper solution.

Is the consensus that the pads are good but too much noise for daily use?
Yes. Even with titanium shims and tons of grease these are not for daily use. Unless you like your truck to squeal like Ned Beatty in Deliverance.

Has anyone tried the orange or yellow pads ?? better/worse ?

I just stuck with green, i didnt want super squeal brakes for marginal improvement still using stock setup, plus rotors already get chewed up quickly anyway, and initial bite cold braking would be not as good as stock.

If i was towing or fully loaded all the time i might think of it, but the real solution is just better calipers and 2 piece rotors, with correct operating temp pads.

Its a shame carbotec doesn't make OE pads for our trucks…….yet, those would be my other choice and have some quality OE fitting pads.

Carbotech will make pads if someone will send them a set of pads so they can cut backing plates.
