Tonneau Covers?

I have had retractable covers on last 2 trucks and they are great... the obvious downside is you lose about a foot of bed space for the canister.
i am going withthe Mopar folding tonneau on the TRX because I’m already giving up the RamBoxes, I don’t want to also give up a foot of bed length.
So a few things about the trifold, first it is technically considered a cover; meaning it will allow some water in. Also, we have had several issues with the covers flying off. Ram will no longer warranty a cover that flies off. I would encourage you to immediately bungee cord the inside to the bed rails of toe downs. Ram switched vendors a few years ago. The clamps are not what they used to be.

Here are some photos with the retrax pro XR installed with the Rambar.

Notice in the photos I added some additional foam padding underneath the tonneau cover so it transitions nicely sitting on top of the rambar and on top of the truck bed rails. This is because the Rambar sticks up almost 1/8 of an inch on top of the bed rail and wanted the tonneau cover to have a clean look.

If you zoom in closely there’s about 3/8 of an inch of gap between the Rambar posts and the edge of the tonneau cover.
Nice install! Just to confirm you ran an extra foam strip under the entire length of the two side rails to accommodate the extra 1/8 of the Rambar on top of the bed rails? Does that leave a gap between the tailgate and cover or does it draw down enough? Do you recall what thickness and width of foam (tape I assume) you used?

And I assume the cover for the 2021 Ram 1500 short box is the one that fits the TRX?

Thanks in advance! You convinced me to get this cover.

We have installed the retrax pro cover as well with rambar, our OEM factory installed rambar has bolts on top (is this something only some trucks have?). It fits JUST barely inside the bolts.

We added foam along the front edge all the way back about 3/4 of the way around the sides for waterproofing. In addition we added a very small piece at the rambar to truck bed side transition. I have some black caulk to touch up a couple areas such at the front corners.

The tailgate area we used a peel and stick seal but I am uncertain how waterproof we can make this. I ordered another tailgate seal to play around with. This is not specific to the rambar so it seems like a solvable issue I might ask the dealer to help out with.

One thing I noticed about the retrax that is a little annoying is that when closing it you need to open the tailgate to tug on the opposite side of the cover to fully extend it for sealing, otherwise it leaves a tiny gap on that side.

The ram installed side utility bars will also not function properly with this cover. The notched opening at the front of the bed is behind the side of the box for the cover, so you cannot remove or install anything already on the bar. It shouldn’t be a problem for us, what do people use these for? I bought the mopar cargo organizer but returning it as it will not properly fit with this cover either.

Do you have any pictures of your install you can post ?

I am getting ready to install mine next week when my Ram Bar comes in and I will be posting some pictures....

Anyone have experience with Truck Covers USA?
My local place that I do lots of business with swears by them. He quit handling Retrax which I have in my RAM. He says the fit and finish of Truck Covers is the best.
I think they are about $1800 msrp but I’ll get a break on them.
Any thoughts?

My Pace Edwards Ultragroove Metal is so lonely in my garage. TRX can't come soon enough! (KZT status)

No, did not have the tie down rails. I purposely did NOT order the bed utility group (spray bed liner, tie down rails, deployable foot step).

I had Line-X spray applied (lighter and more durable than factory spray), and didn't want the tie down rails or the deployable step.

What Line x option did you go with Standard, Premium or Platinum? Looking to do the same hopefully next week!

Retrax all the way! I have had backflips and they are kind of a pain and do not hold up. Retrax is super sleek, and secure. Only down side is the space you lose with the roll up canister which is about a little less than a foot.

I have bakflip now, been looking at weathertech anyone have it??

I had the weathertech on my ‘19 Raptor. It was great. Super easy install and very easy to remove when you don’t need it. Plus backed by their awesome warranty. I would have done again for TRX but need the Retrax for the rack system I’m doing

What type of foam did you use? Where did you get the foam?

It looks great. Are you getting any leak? Also do you think it will work with the Ram bar from the factory with the different bolt pattern? I read the whole thread and it sounds like it will, but I just wanted to get your opinion before I order the cover. Thank you for posting pictures.

I went to order a Truck Covers USA retractable cover and was asked if the TRX bed is "tapered". I looked at a friends 2500 and it has an obvious taper. Looking on the internet I don't find anything. Also, my build sheet just says a 5' cargo box.
Does anyone know or can you look/measure the bed to see if it tapers from the front to the back?

Thanks,

Bill

For those that plan on getting a tonneau cover for the TRX, what brand/model are you going with?
