Stereo upgrade is finally done

Wow, that's quite the setup! Excellent write up and thank you for taking the time to post the photos along with it.

I just featured it on the front page as well (y)
Awesome! glad you all enjoyed it, though probably not as much as I am ;)

The_Sko, very nice install my friend. I am loving my Helix amp/dsp as well. They sound so good!

Enjoy the new tunes!
Hung out with Mike (my installer) this weekend so we can tweak around with the Helix some. Man, that thing is nothing short of knobs to play with as we hunt for the "perfect sound" which I am sure we will never find, but it's also part of the fun in my opinion.

We were messing around with StageXpander and ClarityXpander, check it out if you are curious about those settings.

I really appreciate the pictures and write up. I’ve been thinking about some sound deadening to help with the exhaust drone when cruising around 80mph. While I don’t have any intent on a full audio upgrade, the sound deadening you have shown gives me some thoughts. I live in Missoula so it’s not like getting to Kalispell would be a challenge.
Nope it's not and as much driving to lakes I'm doing these days it would be easy for us to meet up if you wanted to check it out in person.

I am more then happy with the HK. However, I have to say I admire this build and how detailed you got with it.

Interesting idea, not sure how I would get that to be controlled by the head unit at that point without adding an external device of some sorts? Could you elaborate on how that would be fully set up.

My thought in going this route, if you recall, was to keep it simple aka. powered by my phone, and provide the best audio from that device. I always have the option of pulling in a USB drive but goes against point #1.

Thanks Naamanf, look forward to hearing more about this.
How is the audio being fed into the DSP right now? I would assume you would be using CarPlay and if you used it via the USB cable it should be capable of 24/192khz, as long as Uconnect is capable.

Highest audio quality would be to get the USB module for the DSP (or find a lightning the toslink adapter) and run the phone directly to it, but then all control would be through the phone and volume via the Helix Conductor.

Audio is coming into the head unit, out to the factory amp (I believe this is correct BTW I can double check with Mike) and fed into the PAC unit which feeds the OPTICAL input on the V Twelve. Which in turn feeds the P ONE via line outs.

"I would assume you would be using CarPlay and if you used it via the USB cable it should be capable of 24/192khz, as long as Uconnect is capable."

This is the million dollar question, and I am feeding the head unit carplay input via the USB/Lightning cable and not Bluetooth (This will never achieve the quality I desire, which you know) but I don't know what the stock units are capable of. So I figured this is a relatively low-cost science experiment that I will sell if it doesn't work.

You are 100% correct, this would be the best, but this means the volume know on my head unit now does nothing AND not sure how phone calls would work. Lastly I would need to use the "bass knob" for all volume functions and all the extra buttons behind the wheel are worthless while using that input. Which also means I know how to switch audio input at the DSP vs. letting the head unit control everything in a clean and simple mannor.

I'm not done chasing the dragon yet, but again I want it easy and as seamless as possible. AKA not confuse the wife if/when she steals the truck and wants to listen to her music on her phone.

I would A/B using a normal lightning cable to the USB in the vehicle vs the DAC dongle. If you are using the DAC dongle you are adding the extra A/D-D/A conversion and who knows the quality of the A/D in the Uconnect head unit. No perfect solution when using the stock head units but the less you have to convert the better.

But the point of the DAC dongle is to open up the full music potential in the first place and I plan on using the 3.5 audio for Tidal Master quality. This convertor, though initially intended for headphones, may do the trick. Not sure but I agree less is more but this should remove one of the conversations of D/A->A/D you mention above.

I looked a little bit for details on what the head unit can receive and play from a input perspective and wasn't able to find a great answer, who knows this all may be in vein and I end up just coping stuff to a USB drive.

At least with this idea, I don't have to own music, I can just rent it and add more with minimal overhead $.

The Uconnect has a DAC and is using it when you use a USB cable directly. Using that DAC dongle is just going to cause more conversions and is only going to degrade the signal and still use the Uconnect DAC.

I think you missed my comment above, I am going to use the external DAC to skip using the USB input, instead, I will be using a 3.5 cable to plug into the AUX input on the head unit which will skip the internal DAC.

To your point earlier, which I agree with, the cleanest would be straight to the DSP but it introduces all the issues we talked about before. This method provides external to the iPhone clean up of the sound while still letting the head unit control the vehicle's audio and functions as intended and keep all my factory integrations.

What this also means is when changing tracks on the phone, in this AUX mode, I need to do it from the phone which is the only bummer but the closest option I could find while retaining the most options.

Will it skip the internal DAC? My assumption is that the system is going to convert everything to digital so it can MUX all the cars audio. Then it will still use the cars DAC. Now I’m curious to find the answer, wonder where to dig 🤔

It should, at least the bet I'm hoping for. AUX has been left in these head units for a while and though not phased completely out by Bluetooth, USB/lightning connections completely, I HOPE they did that so we could continue to plug into it and have it untouched by the internal DAC audio sources.

I welcome the help! And if you believe this source, please don't laugh too hard, this supports what I am thinking and hoping is the case.

I'm planning that the data is fed via the AUX in analog mode, shot straight to the amp, fed to my DSP, and one last touch of the audio is done and fed to the speakers. The last portion I'm not mad about since this is the true magic of this whole system.

If this is "working" as I suspect I should see a magenta color on the DAC's LED.

Well the folks at Rudy's auto in Kalispell MT had a turkey dinner with all the fixing’s walk through their door!

Sorry but for me playing Kenny Chesney at 150db driving through downtown Kalispell just seems out of place?

Sorry but no one asked you. Not sure why you think I'll be playing Kenny Chesney. Never said that and why would it be out of place whatever I play, wherever I play it.

Not sure what me sharing my setup makes you seem to think it's not fit for Montana vs. what is Texas? California? That's is some pretty ignorant thinking.

All your comments well-deserved, just trying to be funny sorry if I ruffle your feathers

I am almost afraid to ask, and if it comes off as rude, or was previous mentioned, I do apologize. What kind of prices range does a full out build like this fall into? I haven't done a stereo system since I was in high school, which was a LONG time ago.

I joined this forum December 1 of last year when I place my order for my truck and there’s one thing about this forum (which is my first forum by the way) has come to impress me is the quality of people on it, for the most part anyway…….

I’ve sent money to BBB for him to use at his discretion sponsoring people who want to become members but not necessarily be able to afford it.

With in a week or so he sent me a message about the people that benefited kind of thing. Since then there’s been a few more of us folks who’ve done the same.

Me, at age 64 i’ve become a lot more retrospective and always seeking out ways to pay it forward.

On another note; the last time that I was in Montana I was elk hunting with mules and my horse out of Missoula. Having hunted in a lot of different places in this world, that experience was unique because after six days of hard riding I woke up in the middle of night on crazy pain, I had herniated a disc my back had to be life flighted out, it was crazy!

I tried to cowboy off and get back on my horse at a right out but I almost passed out and fell into her river and turned around and gave up the ghost.

Satellite phone and an American Express card, never leave home without it :-)

Luckily my long time hunting partner was able to take my horse and mules back and pick me up from the hospital with some really Bitchin pain relievers in my pocket.

So now at the risk of being rude again, what music would you be listening to driving down town?

Cory

Cory, lets us start with I'm sorry. I'm sorry to assume your post came from a place of negativity. I'm sorry it came from a place of hate, none of which it sound like it did. It's hard to read text the same as it does speech and we all know it never does.

Moving forward sounds like you have some time in my backyard, I hope it treated you well. If you ever find yourself here again let me know, more than happy to buy you a beer or two and share some hunting stories.

I have zero issues with hunting but why would anyone hunt zebra? Other that needing to cull a heard it seems about as pointless as stalking down your neighbors Arabian.

As a on topic note, I talked to PAC about the module and they think the aux input is kept analog through the head unit to their module.
