2023+ digital cluster swap (COMPLETE WRITE UP)

Okay, so the custom tiles are gonna be a no-go without a 2023 BCM. I tried on my 2021 this afternoon, and Jimmy also ran his 2022 BCM on the bench…you can change the appropriate settings but they just aren’t being broadcast by the old BCM.

Since I’m already in this pretty deep (and I like a challenge) I did order a 2023 BCM. Of course that doesn’t mean I’ll actually get one anytime soon with the way things are, but I’ll keep trying. There is apparently a workaround that’ll allow me to program it without dealer involvement so if I can just secure one we should be good to go. Stay tuned.
do you have to replace your BCM?

I don’t really have to. The cluster works but I still want the custom tiles (and maps eventually). So the BCM needs changed for those specifically.

that's what I meant, you have to actually replace the bcm in your truck. I's not some how wired in just for the needed features.

Where is the BCM located? I assume under dash driver side? Easy plug n play? What's the cost for one of these.
I'm in a 22 and really want the digital evic. Kinda of waiting on infotainment, but if there is a cheaper alternative I'm all over it. Thank you for tackling this project!

Correct. 2019-2022 BCMs are simply incapable of broadcasting the messages for the added features of the digital cluster. We tried just programming them in using the 2023 backup file as a reference but they only turn to zeros and nothing comes through to the cluster.

BCM is in the footwell on the driver’s side. It was around $250 but it is NOT plug and play. We’ll need to program as well as marry it to the RF hub. Hopefully we can get this down to a fairly simple process but there’s a lot I don’t know yet. You’d also need a 2023 radio module, but that’s easier.

I don’t want to speculate too much about their kit, but I really can’t imagine Infotainment will be sending out new steering wheel switches, BCMs and 2023 radio modules just for a few added functions. So you can pretty much count on having the same basic functions I have right now if you buy a kit from them. With anything above and beyond needing to be sorted out afterwards on your own.

Curious what the custom tiles are that are missing? (that needs a new BCM)
Custom tiles replace the steering wheel button that does voice recognition. They allow you to set different shortcuts to things like nav, gauges, etc. on the screen.
TBH I never use that function except as a quick page change; I have my nav tile as the first one so instead of having to scroll through 6 different pages on the evic to get to my maps from speedometer, I just tap the tiles button and then the ok button and that shortcuts me to nav.

Only way to get into this menu is that steering wheel button

Yeah, I don’t really know how or how often I’d use it but since I already went through hell actually obtaining the button and then more hell installing it, I’d like it to work.

Of course the irony of the whole situation is that the new button I installed isn’t technically needed no matter what. With the right BCM and configuration the old voice command button will probably activate the custom tiles just the same. But the labeling would be wrong and I couldn’t live with that.

Infotainment just needs to release their price and specs on their swap. I’ll feel a lot better if I can have the cluster, BCM and UC5 swapped for around the same or less money than their cluster alone. I guess we’ll see. I’ll probably have another 2 grand into the remaining pieces to have the full 2023 conversion.

Your approach is much better.
With how many members' pussies hurt over the digital cluster and wanting analog gauges instead, it should be super easy for those with analog gauges to find a digital cluster to swap with. It's simply a win win for both sides. Keeps the cost down too.

Heck, the digital cluster guys would probably be the ones begging the analog cluster owners to do the swap with them.....

You’d think so but I’ve never seen anyone actually pursue that “reverse swap”. Not here anyway.

so really it is just shortcuts?

Great to see people being brave and exploring stuff like this! Be great for guys to find this down the line.

For my purposes I would just set them to show various data like oil temp, trans temp, etc. Something similar to the “gauge summary” page on the old cluster:

If I had one critique of the digital it’s that I can’t change what’s shown in the new “gauge summary” page and it’s just not the data I care most about seeing at a glance:

You can still pull the same info up on other pages but it’s scattered around instead of all on one page. The tiles would fix that and allow 5 fields of data to be shown instead of 4. The digital has a lot more real estate and I’d like to use all of it.

I got tracking number for the new BCM already so this should be fixed sooner than I expected.

New BCM arrived lightning fast. Maybe the supply chains aren’t so bad after all.

Still waiting on a new fob among other things. The gist of the back-door BCM install without dealer involvement is as follows. In addition to programming the new BCM with an altered backup file, you program a new key and the BCM gets married to the RF hub in the process.

Huge props to Jimmy07 for figuring that out along with basically everything else. Frankly none of this happens without him. If you want to add stuff after the fact, especially oddball or highly involved projects like this, he’s the man.

great that it came in quick. Let us know how the back door programming goes

I wouldn’t say that adding all or oddball stuff after the fact is 100% great with Jimmy07. It must be only things that he is intrigued by unless what I wanted was just completely too complicated and out of reach. I contacted him about getting heated seats and steering wheel working in my truck with paying for research and wiring and he completely ignored me.

Besides that I am completely grateful for his time and effort because I have done more mods than I ever thought I would because of it.

Won’t speak for him. But as far as I know it’s just a hobby and I’m sure he does need to be selective with what he spends time on (just like all of us). What I can say is that he helped me on a previous project when there wasn’t a penny to be made. On this job I sourced the cabling from him, but I don’t even know how long he spent racking his brain and decoding all kinds of stuff to figure out why my switch wasn’t working.

I don’t know him personally and don’t want to sound like a shill. But I also didn’t want to do this project without giving him proper credit. Hopefully when this is finished up the 5th gen community will have clear direction on how to do this swap without having to bug jimmy for all the same info I already bugged him for, lol.
