Dram of the Day

P.S. Please explain the glass you're drinking it from.

Cause I'm too embarrassed to take a picture of my straw in the bottle?

Actually the truth is deep seated laziness ... unless I'm drinking something really special that requires a drop or two of distilled water to release the flavors, I don't feel like dealing with hand washing proper whiskey stemware. I have found that over the years a lot of that stuff is overplayed for the sake of ritual or people have been told that's the thing to do, but couldn't tell the difference between drinking it from the bottle or poured properly. I'm not knowing the ritualistic joy of the process, but sometimes I just want my drink without drama. :) The one thing I do do however, other than the aforementioned special pours, is always drink from the same type of glass, that way that variable is consistent across everything I taste.

Thank you for that.

I really enjoy the ritual but maybe that's because I only occasionally have to be involved in the washing.

To the good stuff........🥃

So this is a new release form whomever owns the Hirsh name these days. These things can be hit or miss but at around $40 it was worth giving it a try. I have to say that it's actually very good. Deep and complex flavor profile, especially for a regular proof offering. It's not the best thing you'll ever taste but compares very favorably to other bourbon at that price point and exceeds many other higher priced ones. I'm inserting it into my under $50/bottle daily rotation, and I'd recommend picking up a bottle and to try one for yourselves. It does have that potential of being readily available at the start but then become less so and more expensive.

In other words....get it while it's cheap! Will do, Mr. Soulsea. ;)

Those are my favorite bottles. Those undiscovered gems that you enjoy for years, tell everyone about, and then finally have to pay considerably more for because of the popularity.

I lump Arbelour 12 Double Cask into this category. It was a delightful dram that I enjoyed for years and told others about that had a $50 price limit. It was $40 that was subtle, complex and lingered on the palate with notes of fig, vanilla and oak. Now I can hardly find it stocked in local stores and have to pay $65.

Off to get some Hirsh Horizon.

Yes I am aware that I have a problem.
No I don't plan to do anything about it. :)

Tbh normally I wouldn't have this much whiskey on hand, but because 2020 very few peeps have been around my place to share in the joy, and I can only put down so much by myself.
Man, you must own a liquor store. I can't even begin to get that kind of a collection and I'm only a few hours south of where all that is made. I used to drink Weller 12 year (when it was $45 per 1.5L). I drink a LOT of bourbon, and I'm cheap, so I stick to Old Forester 100 (also in the 1.5L) for my daily. And many of your others for when I'm so inspired. Though I prefer the 100+ proof varieties.

Ha, I do need to point out at this juncture, that I am merely an alcoholic, not an expert. :)

In the past I did love the McKenna 10, Heaven Hill 7, and Wilderness Trail bourbons right off the bat, and like the Horizon they felt too good to stay readily available and priced where they were at release. But I also felt the same way about Piggyback and nothing changed with it.

This may happen with this bottle or it may not, other than prerequisite fundamental goodness the way this stuff plays out has actually more to do with how much inventory they have and are able to continue to have. Also that dynamic is very regional, over here in Charleston, liquor stores keep regular Eagle Rare at the back, mark it up, and only give it to special customers. When I'm in AZ I can find that stuff discounted by the case at the supermarket ... there's really no rhyme or reason to it.

That’s the most pitiful collection I have ever seen. Not a single one has been opened or enjoyed. Crack the lid on one of those.

It's more rare than a TRX.. and thats saying something. LOL

It actually IS more rare currently. There are a handful of TRXs and Blanton's is just waiting list after waiting list that hardly moves. You literally have to know somebody to get your hands on some.

I got a Balvenie 21 for Christmas that I haven't opened that I've got my sights on for the evening. It's been staring at me for a couple of weeks now and I can't take it anymore.

Now let's talk about that wine storage Soulsea.... You show me yours and I'll show you mine? I promise not to show someone else's this time. ;)

I am both Dreaming and I am saving to buy my First RAM TRX 1500 truck her in Australia. Oohhh YYeeaahhh!
Well for now, I just have to wait till they are release in Aus. Late 21 early 22

Drink it your way, right away. No wrong way to consume

No I'm already feeling judged by $90k pickup truck peoples. 😞

What's next, pictures of my monocle and top hat collections?

In all seriousness I was hoping that this thread would be a place that we can all post what whiskey we are drinking at any time, not a me descending into the abyss of drunkeness commentary thread.

Cheers.... am having a cold one. Enjoy your dram!!

I am stuck in a rut. My regular is basil Hayden dark rye. If I’m feeling special I’ll get angel’s envy rye. And if I’m feeling scotch, I do Balvenie 12 yr.

So I ask this to help get me out of my rut. Most underrated whiskey at any price point?

Gentlemen,

Here’s a toast for the fine folks at FCA/Stellantis. My truck arrived at the Alliance rail yard today in Dallas! They’ve been the most responsive group I’ve ever dealt with and kept me informed throughout the entire process. If I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m thrilled to have purchased an FCA product and can’t wait for another. Target date for my short flight to Abilene and drive home..... Feb 10th. Let the countdown begin!

J

P.S. Some of the above is true. Truck is here! Wahoo!

I'm sure others will have great suggestions, fwiw here's a few I would recommend that are worth your consideration, but these are my preferences and yours and others' might and will differ:

Around $25: Wild Turkey 101
Around $40ish: Eagle Rare, Wilderness Trail Straight Bourbon, Heaven Hill 7, Hirsch Horizon
McKenna 10 was originally here, now most stores sell it around $80, which is about right for what it is but not a great value any more.
Also Elijah Craig Toasted barrel has $50 msrp and is probably the best value of everything out there at that price but good luck finding it for that, if at all. Same with Rabbit Hole Boxergrail or many of the basic Weller releases.
Closer to $100: Knob Creek 15 is priced well below its quality and aging, as is Widow Jane 14 and 15. Bardstown releases are around that price point but the better ones are practically unobtanium at msrp. Rabbit Hole ,Willet 4yr Rye, and EH Taylor Rye are priced right around $100 give or take a ten spot.
Above $100 you start getting really specific about matching your personal preferences to the offerings, so I don't feel comfortable throwing random names out there as the higher the price gets the more one's expectations rise and the more the chance of disappointment if one isn't precise with their choices.

There's so much more out there that doesn't come to mind, I'll try to add to it as it comes to me.

Fantastic. I’ll be dead. This is exactly what I was looking for.
