I do calibration work for tier one suppliers and it’s a shit show. None of them can find employees, and when they have employees they can’t get raw materials or trucks to ship parts. Then there is the equipment failure issues. One customer had in injection molding machine go down. A replacement board took 28 weeks to deliver. So for 28 weeks they they were struggling with the big 3s “Just On Time” delivery demands. No company keeps a stockpile anymore so any link in that chain from the company supplying oil to the thermoplastic producer on up to the finished product has a butterfly effect. Not to mention shipping and the crazy convoluted production sequence. For example a company here 45 miles SW of Chicago makes interior door handles for Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, Tesla etc... the Tesla interior mechanical handle is molded here, shipped to New York to be painted, shipped back here to be assembled then shipped to Mexico to
Be installed in a door panel. The Door panel is then shipped to California to be installed on the car. Throw in a traffic accident, tornado, train derailment, hold up at the border etc... and how in the hell does anything make it to the assembly plant “Just On Time”?
