What is this noise/ sound from the engine?

Mine was making the same sound. Was the water pump, wasn’t leaking but the bearings were shot. They replaced it under warranty.

Thanks. I’ll have to pinpoint for them and establish it as the cause. Somehow!

Well so far I can only narrow down that the noise is most loudest right behind the radiator (behind the RAM name on the grill). I took it in today for another reason and they can't "reproduce" the noise, so I'm not sure what I will do from here.

Find another dealer to work on your truck... if there're having that much trouble finding the sound and/or putting in the time to find it, do you really want them working on your vehicle?

It’s hard to get the stethoscope to the water pump pulley directly. Put it on the thermostat housing though and they’ll hear it clear as day and replace the water pump. Also stick your arm in there and wiggle it for them. It’ll have a little bit of play.

That’s a good idea bill try to if I can get my arm under the air box! And will the play be in and out or side to side?

Mine was side to side. You can get your arm under pretty easily. I showed my service advisor where to put the scope and I wiggled it for him. After that it was cut and dry. It’s not a lot of wiggle but compared to the other pulleys it was.

@Omega Update: I had the same noise coming from my TRX - Dealer said they couldnt reproduce it. Told them to start the truck and let it run for 20 minutes and bang the noise reappeared. The truck needs to be at running temp - Ready for this? They diagnosed it as the whole supercharger is going bad - They are replacing the supercharger and all of the pulleys under warranty - My guy at the dealer said its 10K worth of equipment, all covered under the powertrain warranty. I honestly can't believe the supercharger went bad at 9K miles and I dont drive the truck hard at all...figured id update the group

It honestly scares the shit out of me to do anything to my truck tuning/engine wise after this...

@Arch Did they complain about the fans coming on? Where in FL are you if I may ask? My dealership just tells me they can't hear it over the other noises.

@Omega - They didnt say anything about the fans - Was just happy they are covering such a high cost under warranty - In south fl - Its the only dealer close to me - Honestly, Im in shock they are covering it because its they are known for being scam artists - So we'll see what comes back from the dealer :)

@Arch Do you know the method they used for diagnosing? I'm trying to get an idea of what to tell my dealer. Or I may just take it to a different place.

@Omega - not entirely sure. The supervisor called me and said the tech can’t diagnose the sound. I sent him a video of the sound and time him it doesn’t happen on a cold start, only when it gets to running temp. So start the truck and drive it for a few minutes.

The tech heard it immediately after driving it

Same here. Heard a whinning annoying noise, ended up being a bearing. I wash my truck weekly was told water damages them(wtf). It was rusted reason for the whining noise. Then another similar noise and water pump was going bad at roughly 20k miles.
Noise would only start when the truck heated up, of course, different from yours which you say is present at start.

My dealer replaced the bearing and the new one was different, more robust and better sealed. These bearings are shitty. I might eventually upgrade them. They look cheap too

My truck is going into the dealer tomorrow for the same noise, fingers crossed they can diagnose and fix the issue without any drama.

Water pump bear is shot. They will be replacing water pump under power train warranty, a nice surprise I wasn't expecting. The technician said the pulley was and is wobbling, and was surprised I wasn't leaking coolant around it. Pump is ordered and will have the parts replaced next Thursday. He advised to have the coolant system flushed and replaced to evacuate any floaters that may have come off the shaft or bearing. Still keeping my fingers crossed all goes well.
