Vibration/grinding on takeoff

My take away from the star bulletin is wheel speed sensors. Maybe a programming issue?
IF the WSS are slow to react and tell the Transfer case to engage at 1-2 shift when torque is at highest maybe its causing the noise?
Or TC clutch slip

Look at post # 8

how would be a sensor or programming issue correlate to this issue being present only during low operating temperatures? seems unlikely imo

Definitely not what they are saying. Mine only happens in cold weather when truck isn’t warmed up long enough. Very random even then. Star bulletin seems like bullshit to me. Let’s see how many of us still have this issue as the temps increase in spring and summer.

Same with mine. Seems like when trans temp is above 50° it does not happen. Been decent temps last couple weeks around here and have not experienced it once.

If you are having a grinding / vibration from stop using 3/4 throttle when trans temp is below 120 and the grinding sounds like wooden chair sliding across the flow, it is an issue with the b2 clutch. I had a customer with very similar issue, took awhile to figure out, but it was in the trans. replaced his trans under warranty with new and no more problems. I will add, I am the lead performance tech at my dealership, and we are a power broker dealer. Dodge Of Burnsville, Burnsville, Mn.

Ha, a wooden chair sliding on a floor might be the best description of this sound. Thanks for the information.

wow thanks for the info. Another member has the transfer case replaced and it didnt fix so this makes sense

Confirm

To follow up on this. Ive made it a point to see if it still makes the noise after 120+ degree trans temp
Mine makes the noise +50% of the time during full throttle 1-2 shift regardless of temp

This is what mine does as well. It’s was 100% when the outside temps were colder during winter. I could baby the 1-2 shift for 30 miles and if I went more than 3/4 throttle even after that much driving it would make that noise during the 1st-2nd shift. Now with the warmer temps it doesn’t always do it.

I am experiencing the same issue that most people are discussing in this thread. I’m located in Canada but I actually called your dealership this afternoon and spoke with Matt about it. My dealership has basically given up trying to figure out what’s wrong with my truck so I’ve had to look to the internet for help! Is there a specific test or check that was done at your end that helped convince RAM the issue was in the Transmission? What are your thoughts on the STAR case referenced above? RAM Canada Technical Support has basically told my dealership that what is happening is normal, which clearly it’s not. Any help with this would be very much appreciated!!

I'm not sure how these STAR cases work but is it possible for customers to reference other customer's STAR case #'s so that a dealership can look into what has been done as far as a diagnosis goes or even reference other case #'s when they contact RAM technical support? I've mentioned seeing other cases online to my dealership but I get the impression they see it as internet chatter and don't really take it seriously. If there are multiple STAR case #'s referencing the same issue maybe RAM will be open with the cause and fix!

I brought a Star case ( not this one if there is one ) to my dealer and they acknowledged it

Well as of now apparently Ram Technical Support in Canada is saying the noise/vibration is normal so my dealership won’t do anything for me. I can’t get them to question it and they won’t even run the trans pressure test recommended by the other person on here

@RamCares any help with this?

Hey guys - here is a video of the sound my truck is making. What do u think? It happens when cold and on shift from 1st to 2nd gear.
Hey..any chance you could email me a copy of the video? I have the same issue and your video captures the sound great. I’m continuing to communicate with my dealership and Ram customer support about this issue with hopes Ram Technical Support will acknowledge there is a problem. So far only one technician at my dealership has heard/felt the noise so I’m hoping to get more ears to hear it and help people to understand that what I’ve been trying to explain isn’t normal!

I still have issue and was hoping it would go away with warmer weather but hasn’t. Doesn’t happen that often and only when truck isn’t fully warmed up. Only 1-2 shift. I haven’t taken it in to dealer yet. Unless there is a known issue I can point to I know my dealer won’t do anything. It’s impossible to recreate as it happens sporadically.
