Oil preference and filter

I've been doing my own oil changes and have been using the factory recommended Shell oil. I send an oil analysis to Blackstone each time, mainly just to show I've done the oil changes if I ever had a warranty issue. I do the oil changes at 4k miles and both times the results have come back and say that the viscosity is slightly low. Blackstone says it's not a concern and it's not due to fuel contamination. I still don't like that the viscosity is low after only 4k miles though. I'm going to switch to Mobil 1 on the next oil change to see if that makes a difference.
Unfortunately your experience with PUP dropping out of grade is the rule, not an exception. Hell, I have a sample with 1700 miles on it and it was already into the SAE 30 range. I’ve seen other tests that were even worse, but basically all of them show it losing a lot of viscosity. And it most certainly is an issue, especially in an application like this.

We don’t see a lot of high mileage Hellcats; fair weather weekend cars mostly. Many TRXs are going to live much harder lives as daily drivers. Short trips, stop and go. Year round. Some towing. And of course a lot of abuse. High oil temps and heavy loads. The Pennzoil may get “exposed” way more in this application. And unfortunately I think some people will be in for a nasty surprise once these start accumulating 100+k miles. Good idea to be proactive and sample. The engine can tell ya what it wants. 👍

If one is really hung up on using something with the API donut, this is probably the best you’re gonna find. The SDS indicates PAO content of 60-110% (lol). PAO as a base oil has a naturally high VI and won’t be subject to the same type of shear we see on the PUP (a Group III+ mineral oil). It should stay in grade much much better. PAO is also much more oxidation resistant and has better cold weather performance as well.

For all its strengths, PAO does have poor solubility with some additives, so it’s usually combined with an ester carrier oil. These esters have excellent cleaning properties and being highly polar also gives them the ability to “cling” to metal surfaces and reduce wear. Most of these esters are not considered hazardous so they don’t appear on the SDS and we can’t know their concentration. I do know that Red Line runs around 35%.

I have good reason to doubt Shaeffer’s ester content will be anywhere near that high. Most will only use the minimum required to carry the additives. And speaking of, its additives will still be constrained by the API SN spec. So it won’t be the all out best. Just way better than any off the shelf oil. You do pay for it though.
Thought you might have an informed opinion

If Schaeffer's ester concentration was similar, would that sway you from Redline?

Couldn't help myself:

we ARE a wealth of information. Well, some of us are.

I think Red Line and Schaeffer are so close in price that I’d probably stick with what I know and what has proven itself to me over the years. But I’m not a hard-liner or anything, and I know Schaeffer makes good oil.

For whatever it’s worth, the next stuff to go in mine is HPL Super Car. It’s a small company down in Illinois, but they make some really intriguing high end products. They seem to do mainly fleet and racing sales but are also very active among the enthusiast community and communicate about their products like an open book. That’s rare, so I figured I’d give them a shot.

Won’t know until I try but I expect it to perform around the same as Red Line. But also has the same “problem” of not being API, so it’s not gonna be for everyone.

I am sure there are other good oils out there but I believe the factory fill is Shell's top shelf oil. I have done some research and for the money and no questions asked warranty it is hard to beat. Same goes for the OEM filter.

The Schaeffer oil went in the TRX yesterday; will get the test results in 6 months

Had a good shopping experience ordering it here (good price/fast shipping); ordered up a couple changes to reduce shipping costs:

Awesome, let us know how it works out. 👍👍

I will share my experience.
On the first TRX of 2021, I drove 45,000 thousand kilometers.
Now I have a 2022 TRX on it I have 55,000 thousand kilometers.
I have been filling oil since the purchase of Ravenol 0W40 SSL oil filter Mopar SRT MO-041 05038041AA

After reading a lot on this forum but mostly the Hellcat forums I came to the conclusion Reline oil and the WIX filter ( Mopar 041) cannot be beat. I'm sure there are dozens more options that are fine but that's what I settled on.

The catch can is a joke save your money.

Did you get the Schaeffer oil you ran tested yet?

Thanks for asking- will have the results in a few weeks (a couple weeks from 6 month interval) and will make a point of posting them as soon as I get them. I will be putting Schaeffer's in again and plan on sticking with it assuming the results show an improvement over PUP.

Any update on this test yet?

If you had to choose between Redline or Amsoil which one would ya'll go with? Coming up on my first oil change since buying it used if I'm gonna change from Pennzoil then going with either of those two.

So just curious as no one has mentioned royal purple at all. Does that oil just suck now?

RP was bought out around 10 years ago and things haven’t gone too great since. The XPR is still decent but the rest of their line is overpriced and underwhelming. Really no better than the rest of the crap sitting next to it on the shelves of Walmart. The filters are nice though.

I’m about to do my 4th oil change. Car is now 2 years old and just hit 8,000 miles. Dealer has done the last 3 changes. I’m gonna start doing them going forward. Have both valvomax plugs ready and debating on the oil I’m gonna use.

First oil change at 1k at dealership. Next two were done by my mechanic. 4K and 8k. Amsoil oil and filter. Will be changing again 12k and likely just going to keep changing it every 4k miles or so.
