Oil preference and filter

I just did mine last weekend with the Penzoil and the M0-041 filter. I had one left over from my Charger. Used this combo from day one with that car in 2017 to now.
 
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with a Pennzoil filter. 45k now no issues, also get a catch can if yo don't already have one!

What's the deal with catch cans on supercharged motors. I know there are a ton of threads on the subject, I still don't get why people aay they are necessary.

I'm using Amsoil oil and filters. I've been using Mobile 1 since the 90's and figured I'd try something different.

I got tired of reading them!
Always a subject. I installed mine in feb I believe. Changed the oil last weekend and no liquid oil in the can at all, just a light coating of oil in the can

I was going to use Amsoil for my 23 TRX, so I asked Amsoil if their oil met the new MS-A0921 specification for the '23's. I got this reply:

"Thank you for your email.

Currently, the AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 does not meet the MS-A0921 specification. We currently do not have any engine oil to recommend for this model year Ram engine.

We hope this is helpful."

Based on this, I won't be using their oil. I don't want any warranty headaches.
 
I run Redline and Amsoil filter cause why not. Also because I have struggled to find the Royal Purple filter. I have a bear trap magnet on my filter as well.
Samples have came back solid at 5k/10k. Good decrease in break in metals. Waiting on my 15k report.

There's also a thread somewhere on this subject of Pennzoil getting whatever that certification was just to be the factory oil or something like that. It was also discussed that the durantion between/miles between changes and the weight and viscosity are more important as far as warranties go. I really don't care too much about brand. I do my own oil changes every 5k miles.

Yeah, PUP now has the MS-A0921 certification. I'll use that until Amsoil gets the certification. I'm sure their oil is okay, but I don't like the wording in their email, so I'll take the safe road.
 
Not too long ago Viper and other SRT products had M1 as the factory fill. Now that Stellantis is in bed with Shell, they basically want people to think M1 and everything else is somehow unacceptable to use. In some cases on the same exact engines. Please. Nothing changed except where the money comes from.

I don’t think anyone else will ever get that “material standard” for that reason. Especially not Amsoil. Their SS line doesn’t even have an official API certification. Not that it is a bad thing, but that’s a story for another day.

Good point, but I wonder if they can deny a warranty claim with the last words at the end of this paragraph.

It’s also a long road to fight them on it, so I understand people wanting to play it safe and use PUP. If so, I think it’s prudent to be very conservative on intervals for reasons I’ve gotten into before on the forum. Reasons that are readily apparent in my own and any other UOA of the product.

Personally I care less about protecting the warranty, and more about protecting the engine. So I use what gives me the best results based on my samples. Still refining and experimenting a bit, but right now Red Line HP and a Fram Ultra or Amsoil EA is probably gonna be the tops.

I've been doing my own oil changes and have been using the factory recommended Shell oil. I send an oil analysis to Blackstone each time, mainly just to show I've done the oil changes if I ever had a warranty issue. I do the oil changes at 4k miles and both times the results have come back and say that the viscosity is slightly low. Blackstone says it's not a concern and it's not due to fuel contamination. I still don't like that the viscosity is low after only 4k miles though. I'm going to switch to Mobil 1 on the next oil change to see if that makes a difference.

If one is really hung up on using something with the API donut, this is probably the best you’re gonna find. The SDS indicates PAO content of 60-110% (lol). PAO as a base oil has a naturally high VI and won’t be subject to the same type of shear we see on the PUP (a Group III+ mineral oil). It should stay in grade much much better. PAO is also much more oxidation resistant and has better cold weather performance as well.

For all its strengths, PAO does have poor solubility with some additives, so it’s usually combined with an ester carrier oil. These esters have excellent cleaning properties and being highly polar also gives them the ability to “cling” to metal surfaces and reduce wear. Most of these esters are not considered hazardous so they don’t appear on the SDS and we can’t know their concentration. I do know that Red Line runs around 35%.

I have good reason to doubt Shaeffer’s ester content will be anywhere near that high. Most will only use the minimum required to carry the additives. And speaking of, its additives will still be constrained by the API SN spec. So it won’t be the all out best. Just way better than any off the shelf oil. You do pay for it though.
