Driveshaft clunk explanation

What size are the clamps?

Can the driveshaft just be unbolted from the front and supported (leaving the rear attached) and serviced that way?

thanks

^^ thank you, Ordered. I have a large assortment of those clamps and the tool but don't have any are that big...

I’m going to service the yoke this weekend, what is the torque spec on the driveshaft bolts?

Also, I find it curious that RAM states to NOT clean the splines of the old grease and whatever is mixed with them. I can’t think of a single good reason to not at least wipe the splines clean before re-greasing....

Thanks

Simply wiping it down is fine. I get as much of the old junk off of there as possible. Ram’s main concern is likely some dummy using a solvent to clean it. Doing that could obviously cause flash rust and/or other negative effects.

Thank you Sir.... how much credence do we put on “do not reuse” the driveshaft bolts? I can’t believe they are actually torque to yield fasteners. I’ve always used Motorcraft PTFE lube on all my (Ford) hi-po yokes and was planning to use it here and reuse the bolts, boots, etc.. ?.

Thanks...

I’ve reused everything several times including the bolts and even the clamp. Ram may simply say not to reuse the bolts because they have Loctite pre-applied and they don’t trust dealer techs to put their own on. Only reason I see because they aren’t TTY. Torque spec doesn’t give an angle.

I wiped off the shaft with a rag then used an old toothbrush to work the new moly grease into each spline channel, it's been good for the past few thousand miles.

This is what I used..

I had mine done a year ago and the clunk is back. Out of warranty now so not sure if I'm just going to buy the kit myself and install it. That way no week at the dealer for a 15 minute fix.

Kit comes with grease, boot, clamps and screws need to do it.

Part # 68597433AA

TSB 03-004-22
With this TSB how does it work? I have a 2022, looked up my vehicle and it doesn't show this TSB for it. I am taking it into the shop in Oct for another TSB that just came out the braking one, can I just mention my truck is doing it then and they will fix it or schedule it then? It is my understanding that all TSB are free of charge, but its not showing it effects my vehicle under my vin. Also after looking this up and researching it the TSB has a Rev A and only certain drive shaft part numbers are effected. Part # 5301135AC and AD.. truck needs to be built before 02/05/22.

Get @RamCares involved. They got mine replaced. Known issues on our trucks. Mine was a 21 with 44k and VIN was on the list for driveshaft replacement. They maybe able to hook you up. Chris worked with dealer. I had a really good experience with them.

Good luck, I think the part number ended in AF. Clunk gone, hopefully fixed for good. I have a grease kit at home I never used. I'll get you the part number for it when I get home. At the dealer now getting recall 75B done. 🤞.

Your's probably needs this recall SW upgrade too.

What is the SW upgrade?

Oh yes i have that appointment in Oct
Here's the part number for grease kit. Temp fix. 20240914_120258.webp

I've got 15K on my 23 currently. Clunk started at about 5,000 and had the service done. Clunk came back this week and I called the dealership and they told me that the service bulletin has been updated and is no longer just a new boot kit and grease and so on. It's now a new drive shaft... is it too much to hope that they actually figured out a permanent fix?

I don't think the drive shaft is going to be the permanent fix unfortunately. I had mine replaced a while back and the clunk is just starting to return. Others on this forum have also reported it coming back after getting the new driveshaft. Honestly with all the issues going on at Stellantis now and the discontinuation of the TRX I highly doubt we will see a real fix from Ram.

Some have gone to an after market driveshaft ( East Coast Driveshafts or something like that) and seem to be reporting favorable results so far.

I was hoping since they'd switched to a driveshaft replacement vs the boot kit + greasing that they had revised the driveshaft design to fix the problem. Guess I was giving their engineers credit prematurely.

If you actually read the TSB and understand how everything works together the clunk doesnt really make sense. In the TSB itself there is a diag process to determine if it coming from the driveshaft vs trans. I feel alot of shops are just replacing the parts and not diag it. I am very very new to the TRX and havent read everything on this issue but i have been in mechanical shops awhile. The binding theory isnt possible. in order for that "clunk" there would have to be alot of slop between them, poor tolerance and eventually youd strip the splines. In short a new driveshaft that was machined properly would fix the issue. If people are reporting they still have the issue after the driveshaft is replaced..... you can see the issue with that theory...
Could be ALL factory drive shafts are junk and they just dont want to admit it. Once again I havent dont enough research on it to know just yet. I had the clunk 2 times in the 5 days of owning it. My manufacturing date in FEB, 21 2022 TSB showed must be before FEB 05.. Tonight I'm going to crawl under and see if i have the part number effected. Older TSB had my date on it so i dont know how they changed it. All things I personally need to do.

I am far from understanding "how everything works" regarding this issue, mechanical expertise is not my strong suit. If you search this forum you will find extensive threads on this issue and the suspected cause and the appropriate remedy. A couple of the posters in those threads have an engineering background and are quite knowledgeable so you may be interested to see their perspective.

You say you have had the clunk twice in 5 days, in my case I had it at every stop and start so it gets progressively worse. Most report it is more prevalent during the warmer weather. Since I live in Florida that is pretty much all the time. My dealer has told me this is the nature of the beast for an all wheel drive hellcat power train but Ram says it is not normal. It seems the lube kit and the driveshaft updates are bandaids and don't fix the root cause of the issue, whatever that may be. Early reports from those that bought the EC driveshafts are favorable so maybe time will show that to be a permanent solution. The clunk is my only complaint with this truck, I have been extremely happy with it and had no other issues.

If you could find that thread I would like to read it. I'm in South GA so but its been shitty weather lately. Also my commute to work is only 7 miles so not much time for anything to get warm.

Actually, just read this thread from the beginning and it has some discussion regarding the cause. Particularly read posts by @AZDinoPwr who is quite knowledgeable on these trucks. There are other knowledgeable posters on this topic as well and other threads, just play with the search function. This topic goes back a couple of years.
