Dram of the Day

Okay.... Exactly what I was looking for. I made a brand judgement based off of one "vintage" I guess.

I couldn't agree more on the 60% stuff. It's just too much for me to enjoy properly. I end up judging the whiskey harshly due to the "throat violence" as you eloquently put it.

It's one of those mind expectation/relativity things. It feels like it should be a $100 bottle that punches above its weight that is trading at $250 and you're happy to snag one at msrp. The perspective changes when the distiller charges for it what it would have traded for anyway regardless of what the msrp is. It's all in the head ... if you can get past that you paid what you would have paid for it anyway at any liquor store after markup then it ends up being priced right, but it isn't a 'deal' and that's why they are readily available and that's why expectations are hard to meet.

At the end of the day one of the hardest things to do in the bourbon world is to sustain complexity and smoothness at the highest proofs ... that's the only reason BTAC trade where they do. So if perspective is a helpful variable you can look at it as a BTAC bargain rather than an expensive KO. :)

Yes sir that sounds good, but would a cube of ice, or a splash of water help with throat violence??😆

I'm more used to inflicting then receiving, but I can ask around for you :ROFLMAO:

Old favorite … btw they stopped packaging it wood boxes for some reason. All the one that came in my store were bottles only.

Cheers Soulsea! A favorite of mine as well! This one was a wood package with plexi front....from about 6-7 months ago though! Enjoy!!!

I had William Larue Weller once at a restaurant and was blown away. I've never seen it at any liquor stores I've been to. Where should I look to purchase a Weller product?

Well I thought you'd never ask. How many can I get coming for you?

So I finally got around to opening this sought after bottle of OF. I had been holding off on it because of the 125 proof and the aforementioned throat violence aversion, but I figured what's a better time than after acclimating myself with the 120 proof KO bourbon.

This is a complicated one. It's aromas are wonderful, it's taste is powerful and complex, and it's actually pretty gentle on the throat for such a high proof bourbon ... but, it also does that thing where everything is fine until five seconds after you drink it and you get heartburn like you ate a ghost pepper infused burrito.

I'm going to give it a few more tries to see how it plays out but to me this one falls short of what is required to make high proof whiskey wonderful ... it lacks the genius of smoothness at high proof. Best way to describe it is that it's closer to Booker's than to Thomas Handy.

That said it is precisely what someone who likes Stagg JR would like ... so if that's your thing this will be your thing too.

Tequila Corner - found some primavera at BevMo for $125 a bottle so grabbed a few - but your palate is spot on with mine - I prefer the 1942 to it...View attachment 24507
Ok, since you asked, I did open her up and have a taste this evening.

First off, the aroma is excellent. I’m half stopped up with my north Texas allergies, but I can still smell the oak, and the caramel aroma is perfect for the fall. To my palate (and hopefully yours too) this is even smoother than the 1942, to my great delight.

My first taste is a sense of vanilla, followed by a hint of orange and a hint of sweet honey (but not overly sweet, which would be a downfall for me).

I’m really impressed, quite the opposite of how I felt when I drink the Primavera. So much so that I think I’m going to run by the store again tomorrow and see if they still have another bottle to grab up.

Salud 🥂

After yesterday's unpleasantness, the unmentionable bottle has been put aside for the serving of objectionable guests (is there any other kind?), and I've decided to soothe my soul, my throat, and my thorax, with something quite special.

You definitely deserve it, after abusing yourself recently….Cheers.
