Oil Analysis Labs Compared

All very true and why testing in your own vehicle matters most. Choosing your motor oil from a YouTube video makes about as much sense as deciding your favorite ice cream flavor after watching someone else eat it. But if you read the videos comments there are plenty who do just that.

The Hellcat is another animal and I’ll admit mine had me whipped for awhile. These things shed metal like absolute crazy even in good health and obviously cranking the boost on mine upped the stress even more. The SBC LSJR tested, on the other hand…if they hadn’t intentionally put a soft cam in it they could have dropped it into a Silverado and run it 300k miles on Walmart oil no problem.

Both the engine and oil selection in the test were disappointing and not really reflective of what most people have in their daily drivers anymore. And then to so heavily weight the TEOST results when choosing a “winner” although: 1) it has nothing to do with wear control and 2) none of the oils even had euro approvals which would have helped them excel in that test. Odd decisions all around.
Hahha love the ice cream analogy. Speaking of choosing - which oil analysis company is your rec again? I read through where you said Amsoil dropped fuel dilution from the results (except in extreme circumstances or something like that). Im thinking i may send a sample of my Redline here pretty soon but all i have are the blackstone containers at the moment.

Yea i definitely took the wear metals PPM as BS. I also thought the install of a cam designed to wear/fail was some BS as well. Never heard of that YT guy before but I thought he did a lot of things better than some might, e.g., control flush with same oil between tests as well as pouring a quart of the next oil to be tested through the engine. But again, all those things sound good to someone with 2.4% knowledge on the topic like myself lol.

Were you surprised by how well the LiquiMoly did? That's what peaked my interest. Based on his "testing", it did well everywhere except it degraded & shared fast AF. Could you convinced to try a 5w50 LiquiMoly for a 3k interval to see how it performs?
Lake is a nice guy…informative channel and we probably agree on most. Just not that test. He certainly didn’t ask me and didn’t need to respond, but we wound up messaging back and forth about it a few months ago. Ultimately he stands by the results and I stand by disagreeing with them. Can’t get over the temperatures. But no worries and nobody is losing sleep over this one!

LM 5w50 would be a really tough sell for me because the HTHS is so damn low for a 50 at 3.7. Basically in the 0w40 range. Even M1 5w50 is 4.4. Both will shear like mad but I think the M1 stands a better chance overall and did pretty well in my TRX all things considered.

I still use Amsoil but have to specifically request they run GC. No big deal really but wish I didn’t have to. Much like the oil itself there is no perfect lab. We just do the best we can.

I've been using Polaris laboratories for my oil analysis. It's who my company uses so I get the sample kits for $12, and the test facility is halfway between work and home.
They test for fuel dilution as well

The Amsoil test kits are done by Polaris too. I have both accounts and Amsoil winds up being cheaper than buying directly for a typical user.
