Lug nut size

Don’t take it to heart man, it’s just guys busting balls. He wasn’t trying to attack you or upset you. No need to leave
Is he serious or kidding.......thought he was kidding.
Interesting...........

I'm good.

I got the Gorilla locking lug nuts. They don't even come close to matching the factory lug nuts. Stand out like a sore thumb.

Does RAM make a locking lug nut for the factory wheels that matches the factory chrome lug nuts? I told my brother locking lug nuts won't deter thieves but he wants them on his wheels. He is going to see what Dodge has tomorrow. It's his vehicle. Let him have what he wants.

Thanks. Same as McGard wheel locks at inflated price??? These won't be same size as factory lug nuts, will they?? Factory lug nuts are surely larger, right?

Just needed to rant a bit, and this thread provides the perfect opportunity (it's lug nut related). I just had a buddy come over with his 4th gen Ram 1500 (which used to be mine - sold it to him a few years ago... guess it came w/ unlimited tech support :) He needed brakes. No problem... step one - remove the wheels. Grab the big ol' DeWalt brushless DC899 cordless gorilla, and proceed to... not do a damn thing. The lug nuts wouldn't budge. This impact is no joke... I literally ripped the threads off of a 2" hitch ball who's nut was seized some years back... yet it wouldn't budge these lug nuts.

So, we lower the truck back down off the lift, to get the tires back on the ground, because we're going to be applying some major torque-age. Out comes the big 28" 1/2" ratchet... good for around 500 ft.lbs. or so, depending on who's employing it. Yeah... no go. OK - so you want to play? Out comes the 2' long cheater bar, onto a 2' long breaker bar. Now we've got a 4' lever. Archimedes would be proud... but still, the lug nuts laughed at us.

So now, we're in full-on Popeye mode... we've had all we can stands, we can't stands no more. I grab the 6' long piece of 2", .120 wall square tubing. Some quick math here... carry the 3.... divide by Pi... factor the 2nd derivative... yeah, them's a lot of foot pounds.

Ever have a buddy touch off a handgun before you get your ears on? Yeah, me neither... but that's exactly what it sounded like. OK - maybe just a .22LR, but they're still F'n LOUD right next to you. I half-expected to see chunks of sockets and sacrificed breaker bar carnage all over the shop floor. But nope, twas just the sound of the lug nut breaking loose. Cool... only 19 more to go.

THE F'ING KNUCKLE-DRAGGING MONKEY-BRAINED @$$#0l3 at the local tire shop that put his new tires on a couple of months ago must have had his impact gun set on nuclear, and rammed all the lug nuts down to somewhere between 600 and ain't-never-comin-loose foot pounds. By some MIRACLE of modern metallurgy, none of the lugs were stretched... both the lug nuts, and some stock nuts spun on without any resistance. I fully expected to have to replace studs. We got lucky there.

Moral of the story... if you ever have a shop do anything to your wheels, check the lug nut torque... in the parking lot, if possible. Don't assume those idiots have ANY clue what they're doing.

I need a drink...

Great story bro. No surprise either. All those kids know how to do is crank it with the impact.

All my BS aside.........
Agreed. Depending on how long it had been since the shop visit, the factory lugs also have a reputation for corroding to the studs because the thin metal cover holds water and causes problems. In some cases, the lug corrodes and the metal cover swells and you cannot get a socket on them!

I cannot tell which is worse, the shop guys who set their torque wrenches to max (like they are working on a semi or pusher motorcoach) or when you get home and recheck all the lugs.....they are UNDER torqued. Thats why I started picking up my wheels and tires (mounted / balanced) from the shop and mounting them to the vehicle at home. Its more work and more hours, but that way I know its done right. There was guy on the forum recently who swapped lugs in his garage and didnt get them tight / torqued. Felt "loose" on the road....YIKES! Lugs on one wheels were all loose, took out the wheel and likely the studs too.

Bottom line: When I put my faith and trust in others, I am usually disappointed.........CHEERS! 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻 🍻

Reviving an old thread but couldn't find the Gorilla 96644BDX at a reasonable price and aren't very secure anyway so found these on ebay. They look exactly like my stock ones except black so ordered a set to try them out.

Look like they'll chip off if you sneeze by them but hopefully you have good luck! 🍻

lol possibly, they aren't expensive so no big loss if they do.

Be careful with those chinesium ones. It's more than the cost by themselves, if they break off you might fk your wheel up trying to get it the rest of the way off.. I've also seen them machined so bad they would walk off the wheels while underway (loose fit on the threads) - then you get in a catch 22 situation.. you can't give it the beans on torque because of the shit metallugry will cause them to snap, and too loose, they begin to back-off while you're driving causing a whole other set of problems. JMO, but I would look somewhere else to save ~$60

Thanks for the info. Was gonna have a good look at them when they get here. If they don't seem to fit right I'll just chuck them aside. Will keep the stock ones until I find the gorilla 96644BDX that's posted here, they look good on those wheels.

Give a 2nd thought to the DP lugs I posted on the 1st page of this thread, they are a matte black which I think matches up with the wheel a lot better than the glossy black of most aftermarket lug nuts.

thanks, they look real nice on your wheels. Was going back and forth on the locking lug nut, to get or not to get but they aren't worth it. Heck they sell a locking lug nut removal kit at the hardware store. I was just concerned that they wouldn't have a big enough bulge on them to hide the unfinished area but I guess it would still look better that those chrome stock ones so will order some of these. In the pic posted most of it is covered.

Thanks, I ordered them and will post pic when installed.

I'm going to leave mine on. If they rust I will just go back to the stock ones.
