Full Engine Failure 7k miles (service throttle control)

Some may have seen this on another thread, but I wanted to start my own in case others run into this issue.

Long Story

Love my truck and have been telling people it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Zero problems up to this point. I also drive like a grandpa, but I love knowing I have the power in all my cars... even if I never use it. Never even tried the Launch Control yet.... I know.

On a 3 day trip from Portland, OR to central washington for a 3 day class with a buddy. Location is east of Yelm, WA and is in the middle of nowhere. We finish our first day of the course and we are driving back about 5:30pm. Dark, Getting cold (upper 20's), 2 lane highway with no shoulder. "whack, whack, whack whack.." sound and the "Service Throttle Control" lights up on the dash. I now have zero power and coast around a corner, luckily find a gravel driveway to coast to... almost. I am sitting 3/4 on the driveway and 1/4 on the road. It is dark, NO CELL service for miles and no homes within view, luckily I see an old highway cone up the road. I run and grab that and put it out in the road 50 yards in front of my vehicle. we are 8 miles from town and a few from the class/course we just attended all day. I leave my buddy and run up the road to the closest house. Nobody home. Finally I see headlights... a car is coming. I flag down a car and it is a 65 year old woman with two small dogs, I am a 45 y/o man. She give me a ride! Bless her heart! Back to our class/course and the instructor gives us a ride to town.

Cell Service. I call Ram roadside assistance and the first person says sorry we are having tech difficulties etc.. and to call back later. I tell her, mam I need to get my car off the road ASAP. SHE HANGS UP on me. I keep calling back and finally get someone to help. Roadside assistance tows it to the nearest Chrysler Jeep location in Olympia. So truck is safe, but I have no car. I call roadside back and try to lineup a rental car, they are no help and keep passing me around to other numbers. Finally I call my dealer and they are no help either. I get a taxi 45 minutes into town the next day to rent a car. no problem I will take care of that later.

Chrysler Jeep Olympia says they can't even look at it for 10 days.... So I call my dealer to have them tow it back. They have me tow it back on my own Dealer Hillsboro Dodge ($1000) and maybe we can file a claim later. I tried AAA first (I have premium) and they said, because the truck is in a SAFE space, they could not tow it even though I am premium. Raised it to their supervisor and they said NO too. First negative experience with AAA in 25 years.

My Truck has been sitting at Hillsboro Dodge since February 3. They finally looked at it on Feb. 17. Their initial diagnosis is a "valve got sucked into a piston. Metal on Metal contact and likely a full engine replacement.. If it is under warranty". They are continuing to do diagnostics and working back with Ram. I have officially filed a report with Ram so they have the specifics, but they have been little help thus far.... and the hours on the phone has been likely the worst part.

Hillsboro Dodge has pulled a demo Ram 1500 our of inventory for me to use. This was made available on Friday, Feb 17. I am thankful the Hillsboro team decided to do this, but this was after 2 full weeks of no car. I am lucky we have other vehicles, but can imagine the pain for someone who does not. The tech says if all goes well and it is under warranty then it will be at least 1 month.

It appears a few others have had this issue too. If you have had this happen, please reach out and we can get the group together to monitor how this is remedied.

Thank and I hope this does not happen to you.

Can't wait to get the truck back... but might be a little gun-shy about Dodge now.

My quick story that is in a parallel universe with yours:

Hopefully the story is encouraging because it turned out well!

Bottom line before you read all this crap, force the dealership into lobbying the mothership to have the entire motor and supercharger replaced, anything less than that you’ll be driving around with a motor that you’re always going to be worried about.

My new truck had 6600 miles and six months and my truck and on it’s own suddenly stopped and would not restart.

Had it towed to my dealer, not the dealer I purchased it from which was out of state for them to investigate what the hell is going on. It took almost 3 weeks for them to actually get to the truck because there’s only one engine mechanic under employ at this dealership. No big deal because I have another car that I can use.

When the mechanic was able to take out a couple of things he used to his sneak a snake camera to look and see what was going on inside and it wasn’t good, the supercharger had lost a bearing and it went through the screws chewed it all up and then went into the intake manifold, and destroyed the motor internally.

ok, shit happens…… they told me that rather than tearing the entire motor apart and then ordering a butt load of parts, that they would petition the mothership to get approval to install a brand supercharger and motor.

Knowing that this is going to take a while, I asked my service girl if they had a loaner/courtesy car that I could use while my car was in the shop. They gave me a 2022 ram longhorn, which I absolutely freaking loved completely free of charge, just so you know, I had it for almost three months for free.

So my story ends with, (knock on wood) I now have a brand new motor and a brand new supercharger and as a matter of fact, a brand new catalytic converter‘s as pieces of metal went into that as well, and I’m happier than a pig in slop. Good people did good things and couldn’t be happier with the end result. It’s so shitty that this process isn't the same across the country and you have to go through craziness like this is.

Good luck, brother, sending positive thoughts your way!.

I see you're from San Marcos. Did you take it to Bluebonnet in New Braunfels?

Update- Engine is set to arrive at my dealer on 3.24.23. They have also told me they are ready to work on it as soon as the engine arrives. I have no idea how long an engine swap will take, but I will keep you all informed.

@mr_Beaverhausen I hope you are having better luck these days.

dc
Hang in there!

Hopefully your long block arrives with the superchargers. Mine didn't and that took another week.

I'm almost three months 3k miles on the new engine and it's running fine.

I hope you opened a case with Ram to see if they will offer you any type of compensation for the extended downtime.

It's been a while but I said I would provide an update. So it took 4 weeks for the dealer to open the hood. 4 weeks! AS soon as they started the engine breakdown they found the culprit. The piston shaft broke and the whole lot of it go tossed into the engine and shredded. Got into the supercharger even. Total loss. Nevertheless it took another two weeks for them to finally get an authorization to get a new engine and super charger. Cannot give me any idea when it will arrive. Still no loaner. Best Chrysler has offered is $60 a day to rent a truck. Cheapest rental available is an F150 for $85 a day plus tax. I am pursing Lemon Law refund via NY AG. Will keep you posted.

Glad to hear its moving forward.
Did the wrist pin or the connecting rod fail?

Derek. Sorry to hear about this pain. I also got an update today. My truck was dropped off on Feb. 1. I am being told the engine has now been replaced (no supercharger damage, so no replacement). Once they replaced the engine last Friday they tried to fire it up, but the starter was also fried. They ordered the starter an it arrived today. They believe they will have it running and through a test drive this afternoon. I might have my truck back tomorrow, 2 months after total failure. Not quick and not easy, but I least I had a loaner truck.

More to come once I have it in hand.

I finally received my truck back last week from my dealer. It took a little over two months. I have not driven it much as I have been out of town.

Overall, once I received the loaner it was an ok process but getting there was tough. Communication with Ram was one of the most painful customer service processes of my life. Ram pointing one way and the dealer pointing the other. Nobody would take responsibility.

Now back to the break-in period again, but I am certainly glad to have my truck back.

I am still trying to get reimbursed for my tow to the dealer $1000 and the rental car to get me back to Oregon ($250). My dealer is working on this now. We will see how this final stretch plays out.

I will keep you all informed.

They NEVER call back.. At least for me... @RamCares :

This is something you all REALLY need to address.
It sucks bad enough getting crappy, or incomplete answers... But getting ZERO response at all... And having your Dealer tell you THEY can't get answers from above either, is beyond frustrating.

I opened a case with Ram. They told me they were escalating to top person and they would call me back in two days. That was 10 days ago and I have heard nothing.

Update on my Ram. This week customer care called me to let me know the engine and supercharger had arrived at the dealer, and they were working on it and I should have my truck back next week. Of course the dealer told me they would keep me posted and didn't bother to tell me this. During this time I posted all of my files to the arbitrator, including detailed notes on every interaction, attempted interaction, all files related to my ownership (bill of sale, title, etc.), payments to the bank, pictures of my truck in the same spot week to week with no work done, etc. The day after I submitted the attorney for FCA sent me an email that they would buy back my truck for what I paid for it. Took further negotiation to get them to pay for my rental truck, which was only 3 week vs. the 11 weeks my truck has been laid up. I was almost tempted to wait and get her back, but I'm so soured by RAM service from dealer and HQ that I just can't. I bought the most expensive vehicle that dealer had ever sold (at the time) and they couldn't give a shit about my issue. So, it ends with me essentially driving a RAM TRX for free for 10 months (actually just interest payments on my loan I guess).. Will be going next weekend to buy a Sierra Denali Ultimate. Was thinking about a Raptor, but they are now topping $110k properly equipped?! Crazy. Best of luck to all of you TRX owners out there!

Derek- Sorry to hear that and it definitely sucks.

I did receive my truck back after a couple months. Now I am stuck trying to get reimbursed for the rental and the tow. Ram makes it such a hassle to get reimbursed that I assume most people just quit. My tow was $1000 and my rental was super cheap (Kia- 2 days) $250 or so. Ram just got back to me and said they would reimburse $80 of the tow. My uber to and from the rental place was more than that... I did not even ask for it. After going round and round with customer service, this is what I got back.

"We understand that this was not the decision that you were hoping for, and we apologize for that, but that is the decision of the company based on the information provided for rental Goodwil of $ 80 for 2 days february 03- february 04 2023 . If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly (800-992-1997), and they will be happy to answer any further questions that you may have
Kindly allow 30 days for the check to arrive at mailing address. "

I have not heard back yet on the towing ($1000). I would assume they will once again lowball.

We will see. The bottomline is there is a right way and a wrong way to handle customer service when your product fails. Ram has handled everything the wrong way from start... to .... almost the finish. I worked at a Fortune 100 company for 20 years and handling customer service this way would have a full reorganization in process really quick.

Same exact thing happened to me Friday night. 1.5 hour wait for tow called by Chrysler emergency Roadside. I was in a lane on a windy road with 50 mph speed limit and totally dead truck. Called the police to drop a flare and they arrived quickly and said we needed to move the vehicle faster and their tow would come in ten minutes, which it did. Towed to local garage then I arranged for Chrysler to pick it up and take it to the dealer. Waiting to find out what the deal is, but it sounds exactly the same in terms of the noise, the same warning light, and immediate engine failure out of nowhere. I have put the pedal to the floor maybe twice in 10k miles and never used launch control either. 😬 Was doing ~50mph with no load, trailer etc. and not even accelerating when it happened. Will keep everyone posted on this thread.
Wow and I drive it like a bat out of hell every day and runs amazing ,after proper break in off course and I have 15k. but it’s all luck of the draw when it comes to having to get service.

Original Post Update here- Failure Again!

So I finally got the full engine swap done. After hours of conversations, I was reimbursed for the full tow amount, $950.00 and about 1/4 of the rental cost.

I am back to breaking in the engine for 1000 miles or so. Driving back from work two days ago... "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" light pops on the dash! I am in stop and go traffic and finally is speeds up, but my truck will not shift out of 1st gear. I pull over, put it in park, then back to drive and again... it will not shift out of 1st gear. Luckily I was near an off ramp. I pulled off the road safely. Broken down again! Parked it in a lot off the road and called my dealer. Tow truck.. wife picking me up.. the works.

Needless to say I am disappointed. I loved this truck, but I officially have a lemon. blown engine, some sort of transmission failure... it is too much for me and I no longer can trust this rig for family road trips nor work. Also, more than anything else, I can't image having to work back with Ram/Stellantis anymore. Bummed to say I am out on the Ram TRX.. I am definitely going to get another truck but have not even looked at anything else in years. I am thinking AT4 but if anyone has guidance, I am all ears.

I will keep you all informed on the how I go about returning the rig, selling it, or using lemon law. My dealer was very open to a number of ideas.

Don’t get the at4 for the shocks. The multimatic dssv are a joke
