🔥 EXPLODED My Front Diff - SOLVED!!

Looks like a pretty ductile failure to me. Probably just the repeated beating from the 40s and off-roading that got to it over time.
crazy thing is we had the diff replaced around 30k b/c the dealer couldn't get the intermediate shaft out of it. Soooo...if I'm now on a 30-40k mile plan for front diffs, a 7-10k mile plan for CVs, and a 45k mile plan for trannies, this is gunna get expensive quick :oops:

I also got to thinking about this, if, while you were all twisted up as it broke, the droop caused a CV to bind and stop the shaft...bang. It would be hard to replicate in a shop but next time you have the front end jacked up max the droop out somehow (bottle jack?) and see if the CV is binding at full droop.
So ur thinking the CV is hitting something at full droop? I'm about 95% sure it's clear at full droop but who knows. I do know, however, that we were nowhere near full droop when we went bang.

Got a little clip here:

Hmm. Maybe not then. I just saw the twisting on the shaft and it got me to noodlin’ on it. At enough of an angle, CV joints will bind. Take one of your spares and flex it, you’ll see what I mean.

oh 100% agree. I just knew we weren't all that flexed out at the time AND there wasn't a lot of weight on the front either. If they were bound up or we were trying to climb heavy in the front, this would make (more) sense. But all the drama was in the back when my rear tires were trying to climb a ledge. Fronts were on loose gravel at the time which makes this so strange IMO

Bit the bullet & ordered a new one. $1420 shipped wasn't terrible but also had to add 2 spare CV axles to the order so $2k hurts a bit more
Bro! Missed your shot! Shoulda ordered an RHO front diff and 3.92s for the rear if you were buying a whole new diff.

actually thought about it but nobody's confirmed whether it would work and whether Tazer is all we'd need to change the ratio. Plus i'd be totally F'd if it didnt work. Money is tight AF right now. Replacing axles every 7-10k miles is adding up quick

Mannnn. You supposed to be the guinea pig! 😂😂

You mine as well go ahead and do the RW long travel at this point, it probably be cheaper 🤣

I had a line on a wrecked RHO that was local, but the guy just stopped responding to my messages. Crazy how people just don't want to spend ANY time selling stuff.

Ah well, the search continues. If I can't get anything out of a wrecked truck by the time I make it that far down my planned mod list, I'll just buy new ones.

If all i had to do was buy the front RHO diff, I woulda rolled the dice. But potentially dropping $3-4k on a dice roll aint in my budget rn haha

Front diff is pretty cheap, like $1,600 direct from MOPAR.

You can get the rear gears for like $800 or so, I think. I'd swap the diffs, disconnect the front driveshaft, then take it for a rear gear swap before reinstalling the front driveshaft.

Not a bad idea man. I think I'd prolly just buy the whole new rear diff if it's not much more than the front. By the time i grenade my new front diff (ETA this weekend), i'm sure my rear diff will be on its way out. I'd be more inclined to Just do a fresh front & rear at the same time and send it into oblivion lol.

HOPEFULLY by then, some company like Yukon or something will have some real F'in gears for us. Jumping from 3.55 to 3.92 isn't exactly earth shattering by any means but I can definitely say there is 0 chance of us ever jumping to 42s without proper gears. I've done enough damage to my driveline as it is!

I know RW offered gears for the rear. But he said it’ll be 3k and that’s not including the custom front diff housing.

Say WHAAAT?! He offered gears we could just drop into the Dana 60 rear? What gear ratio?

This is what he said exactly….

“
Hey partner, I appreciate your interest. We already have front differential gears available for the TRX and currently our rear end. Housing is an offering as a complete unit.

My question to you guys is are you interested in re-gearing your stock rear differential? There are no gears available for it and none of the gear manufacturers show any interest in doing so although I have found an alternative route where we could make Gears for around $3000 I know it’s an expensive gear set, but it’s a lot cheaper than a complete rear end”

Is that through email or forum? I think we'll have to touch base with them to get more details

Nah man, the full axle is like $5,000 lol.

Also, I don't know why you'd buy aftermarket gears for the rear when MOPAR has the 3.92s for A LOT less money.
