Just noticed my rear axle shock (guess RAM calls it a damper) went out on me at 37k miles. I haven't driven the truck in a couple weeks and my wife actually noticed oil under my truck in the garage. It looks like the seal failed and it dumped all the fluid out which made a pretty big mess. Can't believe there was that much fluid in it, initially thought it was the pinion seal on the axle. Anyway, I was going to replace it with the King version and see if it lasts any longer. The price is about the same and none of the local dealers have the stock Bilstein one in stock. Anyone know the difference if any between the 2...or have one and can comment on any differences they noticed? Hopefully the King one has a better seal anyway... LOL

If you can get the OEM under warranty, i'd prolly do that. Not much difference btwn the 2. We've run the King for about 20k now. It might be a touch softer but 100% wouldnt be able to tell if you blindfolded me. I will tell you that you have to trim the cap/body of the King because it impacts the bracket quite a bit. Kind of annoying and not really acceptable IMO for a bolt-on made for our truck but it's only $180 so not a big investment. If you're curious, go for it and you wont be disappointed (or pleased for that matter). You'll just have no more curiousity 😂

Damn, just ordered the King one last night. LOL That sucks you have to grind the cap for it to clear. I'll see if it's too late to cancel the order. Appreciate the heads up.

It's not like a huge amount but we had to grind it and it's still impacted a bit more. I think it's done impacting now that it's notched itself out enough lol

Is this the impact spot you are talking about?

Ah my pic was from the rear main shock not the axle shock.
I dodnt realize you were talking about the axle shock hitting

Okay, not that bad. I can handle that, will plan on busting out the ole grinder. LOL

Got this installed yesterday and I'm happy with it. The factory damper would bottom out when I got on it, especially at highway speeds for some reason. It did that from new so I don't know if I just got a bad one and maybe that's why it eventually failed? The King version doesn't bottom out even though it does seem a bit softer as @FULLTHROTTLERICK mentioned.

I ended up grinding off quite a bit of the axle mount since the instructions didn't show how much to grind off and I didn't want to do the job twice. LOL The instructions don't give the torque spec for the bolts either but I found those in the torque spec table that @OnTheReel posted. For anyone needing those in the future, the front should be 122 ft lbs and the rear is 148 ft lbs.

What’s the travel on that 5th shock?

If anyone gets a chance, can they measure the shaft showing when fully extended and then the “eye to eye” measurement when fully extended.

I’ll take any information you can give
