Powerstop Z36 Brake Kit Initial Review

So a quick update on the Powerstops. After going offroad a couple times, they started making some noise. I cleaned them all out thinking some dirt/mud got in the slots/etc but still have a faint scraping noise when turning the wheel. Completely inaudible with windows up but with windows down & radio off, if u turn the wheels quickly side to side you can hear it. I imagine the supplied grease i had to put on the back side of the brake pads has since worn off… def not taking em apart to relube. Im good with it as long as it doesnt get any worse. Just kinda sucks riding through the hood and she sounds a bit like a clunker when i turn the wheel lolol.

Maybe nows the time to get the clickity clack King external bypasses to complete the sound effects haha
If there is any frequency to the scraping sound (changes with wheel speed) then that is just an artifact of cross drilled and slotted rotors. They all make noise. Pad float is never perfect, especially on new pads so when you turn the wheel you get a little flex into one pad side or the other.

Ahh ok makes sense and good to know. thanks man!

High performance pads and rotors (slotted) all make noise and sound like crap for street driving IMO. Given that the advantage is usually only at very high temps (racing conditions), that’s why I have stopped running them on street cars. Thick well ventilated rotors (proper vanes) with high quality materials and hybrid pads are the best suited for normal street and slightly spirited driving. Lots of big brake kits don’t come with cross drilled or slotted rotors for a reason… if they actually helped with stopping distance they would include them because the marketing would make sense.

The Rotora HD setup has now been installed on all four corners!
The difference to the OEM setup is immediately noticeable.
Pedal feel, brake bite and stopping distances are all improved.
I will do some actual tests when time permits, but suffice it to say I am a big fan!
You can have all the horsepower available, but if you can’t stop effectively you have lost the race!

Looks nice but for that cost i think i'd rather do the entire King/Kibbe suspension setup lol!
Blaster, Thanks but It is not about the looks, but rather superior braking performance. The King/Kibbe suspension may be next!

Installed front & rear Powerstop Z36 drilled & slotted rotor & carbon ceramic pad kit this weekend. Of note, if u havent done rear brakes, make sure you get a piston compressor and rotate the rear pistons as you compress them. Almost ruined my week lol.

Install was pretty easy but did take about 90mins per corner with my 2 and 6 yr old helpers, taking my time, cleaning the rust off the hub surface, poking out about 5lbs of Windrock pebbles out of the calipers etc.

Quality seems pretty nice and they look fantastic especially compared to the factory rust buckets lol. Initial driving impressions after proper break-in are that they are FAR SUPERIOR to my OEM (which had 17k miles) when the brakes are WARM. When the brakes are stone cold, the OEMs seem to have a bit more initial bite.

So id say that Powerstops feel like a 30~35% improvement over stock when brakes are warmed up. OEM feels about 10% better when brakes are ice cold.

Overall very happy so far especially at the price point. Couldn’t justify $4k for front brakes only when about $600 gets you a noticeable improvement over stock.

I have less than 25 miles on them so far so I will add more feedback as I tick off some miles. Some pics below.

How are the power stops holding up, they look awesome. Drilled and slotted for $600-$700 seems reasonable. Only have 19k miles on my truck but don’t see the prices of these going down anytime soon, only going up so may get a set for when ready for brakes. Let me know and may pull the trigger.

I bought some for my old 2005/6 srt10 Quad cabs- they didn't survive 3000 miles as the 2005 OEM big pads cut right thru them.... Turns out they are made in prc aka China - I returned the 2006 set for a full refund. TireRack had much better rotors and that's what I used on both SRT10s.....
Too much sand were I am ... So I keep the Hydro Blue Pearl 2021 TRX on the street with a California legal aFe carbon fiber pipe and hi flow Air filters. Then a carbon fiber air box cover....
