Exploding Sunroof

I have seen quiet a few shatter on the AMG and BMW forums. Most of them had ceramic tinting which they said was a contributing factor in the exploding. I have had a Pano on my last several cars and never had an issue but I did everything in the world to try and keep the sun from cooking me through the roof, in the Texas sun. I didn't pick this TRX, it found me as I was driving by a car lot one day. It didn't have a Pano and I was glad it didn't. It also didn't have all the packages I usually get and I decided to get it anyway. Honestly, I don't miss any of the features that I always thought I needed.

Adaptive cruise always got on my nerves because the min distance it would allow between cars was big enough for 2 cars to cut in front of me and then it would slam on the brakes.

I thought I couldn't live with out the blind-spot mirrors but this truck seems like it has zero blind-spots compared to my AMGs.

It doesn't have seat memory which is just strange but no one drives my truck besides me so it doesn't really matter but for some reason that bugs me.

I kind of feel like at my age and always being a tech junkie, that I am starting to "unplug". I have quit using my bike computer on my MTB and Road bike so I am enjoying riding vs try to beat a stupid Strava record.

My Dragy is in a drawer and I don't really care if I have the fastest truck in the world-It puts a smile on my face and feels pretty fast for a truck.

Heck, I don't even use Android Auto anymore, I just turn Waze to see where the cops are on my phone like the old days.

I don't have to be any certain place at any certain time so I quit looking at dates and times and I don't have a watch anymore.

I did have to add a cat-back for the sound I was looking for, a bed cover and running boards for function. The truck is just really good how it is at this point of my life.

Crap...I think these are all signs of slowly dying...and boy did I get off subject.....:p

Exactly why I optioned my level 2 without a sunroof. I could also see the tires chunking a good sized stone up in the air when doing some spirited off-roading. Just something to break/leak that I didn’t need or want. Only about 5 days out of the year are good enough weather to open a sunroof here in AR anyways. Best of luck with the repair though.

If I didn’t have my sunroof I wouldn’t be able to pop out with the m240. 🤷‍♂️
You have other options my man!

I have had sunroofs in almost every truck/SUV I have had over the past 20 years and never had a problem. Most likely cause when this happens is a sharp rock landing just right...Here in Hells Acres (AKA AZ desert) I do have 70% ceramic tint as it does help reduce heat transfer, also if something should happen the film will at least help keep the glass in one piece.

Rocks don’t make glass explode from the inside out. Just sayin’.

was it tinted? The shop i took my Tahoe told me he doesn't do sunroof tint because of this very same issue you are having.
Same, the shop I use for tint and ceramic said they won't do it. I actually listened for once lol..they are vey reputable and do many high end vehicles.

Not tinted. Stock and only opened once or twice since new.

I would like someone to draw me a picture of a rock being flung up from my tires and hitting my roof at 70mph.
That rock is going to hit the Raptor eating my dust.
Are you even taking in consideration that Earth is round (oblate spheroid)?

Has anyone seen this?
Driving on freeway 70mph and the sound of a gun shot goes off over our head.
2022 TRX , took delivery in April 2022, View attachment 51671View attachment 516727,000 miles.
Sunroof blew out from, what looks like the inside to the outside.
No overpass nearby and nothing hit it.
Local dealership says they have never seen this before.
Want to schedule for inspection in December, then order parts. (this is the dealer I bought it from)
Spoke to Ram Care, they made it very clear that it is not a warranty issue (without anyone looking at it).
They told me to try the next closest dealer (150 miles away). Said to cover the vehicle until the dealer can inspect it (December)
Nothing more they can do.
NOTE- Not tinted. Stock and only opened once or twice since new.
Why do you say it blew out from the inside out? 70mph going down the highway is going to suck everything out

True, but at highway speeds with the A/C on the cab is pressurized and depending on where the damage started, it can certainly appear to 'blow out'.

However, please note I did say most likely (most often) cause of exploding sunroofs is some type of external physical trauma to the glass itself...

I mean, it's conceivable in the TRX he could be going fast enough that he makes it all the way back around the circumference while the rock is hurtling back to earth and smashes through his pano...

The cabin is never pressurized. There are huge vent flaps behind your rear seats that equalize the pressure with the outside.

I had the same response from my tint shop. Looks like OP didn’t have it tinted.

This is awful, but hopefully very rare overall and easily repairable? Ideally via warranty as a glass manufacturing defect.
Doesn't look to be a large amount of cases on RAM forums given the millions of trucks made etc.

Spot on. I had mine tinted (non-ceramic 20%) with no issues thus far In my 20ish years on car forums, these places loooove to blow things out of proportion lol

Directed at everyone: out of curiosity, is that ^^ the actual price for the glass used with these panos?
