Cool day today ...

First I went to pick up my consolation Parker's at TW. I say consolation because I got an email yesterday saying I didn't win anything in the spring lottery but they had one of these available for me instead. This is after I did win in the Feb raffle but my win was a bottle of Blanton's. So if you're keeping score with Total Wine, you lose when you win and you win when you lose.

Speaking of Blanton's, my local store had a bottle of it (not pictured) so I got it to give as a gift, then a good friend dropped by with worthy gifts ... a bottle of WFP which is my favorite bourbon in the world, and a bottle of Old Soul 15. I've been buying and drinking Old Soul 13 any time I can get it and it has become a personal favorite and just about the best $100 bourbon out there for my money. Looking forward to seeing what the 15 will be like.

I also decided to crack open the fancy Belfour LE rye to see what a hockey goalie can do with whiskey. The short answer is not much. Don't get me wrong, it tastes delicious but there's nothing interesting or special about it. There's nothing to love or hate in it. It would be a great daily at $60/$70, but for me not worth anywhere near the $250ish it sells for, even with the very pretty bottle. For the sake of comparison, the Parker's Rye is immeasurably better and cheaper if you can find it at msrp.

I almost bought a regular Belfour Rye yesterday and then I got to thinking..... I loved Ed in the net but I'm guessing that fancy bottle plus his name so big might likely be the biggest selling points. I took a pass and got a case of Hirsch Horizon on the recommendation from a guy. It was $35 a bottle and something tells me it isn't going to be for long. I need to quit giving away all of my secrets.

On another note..... Angel's Envy Finished Rye was $150 a bottle and I had just cleaned out Speck's of their allotted 6 after six trips to the store at $92. It's the wife's choice over all else so I'm glad I did.

And SS scores another bottle of the glorious Blanton's?! You lucky dog!

I picked up a couple of stragglers with a bottle of Larceny which I would describe much like that above. It's meh..... It's not remarkable, a bit light but not offensive in any way. Not shabby for $26 a bottle but I like a little more back end and complexity. The Barrel Dovetail will get opened this weekend. I was really excited about it until the salesman saw it and commented on how great it was like he was trying to sell it to me. I'm suspicious of all store employees that make any recommendations but I'm a cynic. Don't sell me what you ordered too much of. I'm on my own tasting journey.

Cracked open the High West MND act 8 Rye, which the latest one that was released a few months ago.

MND has been hit and miss for me, some have been good, some have been meh, all to date didn't drink up to their price, so much so I that had completely given up on it until someone gifted me this bottle. This one is different, it is reaaaaaly good. Puts that Belfour LE rye to shame. And it actually delivers for the price. Highly recommend this batch if you run into one.
