Anybody ever try adding THIS to their engine oil?

Nobody denies the benefits of moly. And that’s why a lot of oils have it already. So much for a well kept secret, I guess. It is actually employed as a friction modifier FIRST for fuel economy, but secondary anti-wear benefits have been shown at 200-300 PPM depending upon type. Most of the boutique oils have at least that amount in a very effective trinuclear form, so if you want more moly, just keep running one of those!

With all apologies to the compelling AI generated Japanese man, blindly dumping the solid particle form into a modern, fully formulated engine oil is just not the way the citied studies found improvements. At best it does nothing. At worst, adding MoS2 particles to an oil that already has liquid MoDTC can disrupt the MoDTC’s tribofilm and increase friction and wear.

And no, friction and wear aren’t the same. For instance, the most effective antiwear additive we have (ZDDP) actually increases friction as a sacrificial wear layer. MoS2 then interacts with it to reduce friction as well as provide the secondary antiwear layer. So that’s basically “the dance”, at least until someone stops the music by adding something they shouldn’t.
