12.5 vs 13.5… why are you picking what?

37” 12.5 vs 13.5 Cornering Performance

For those of you that went 13.5 width, did that improve everyday handling in anyway vs stock? Particularly cornering at speed, fast sweepers, etc?

While clearly not what these trucks are intended for, I’d still love to improve cornering performance where possible. My Raptor on 17” 12.5 37’s hated fast corners and we have a lot of them out here. Pretty much any direction on pavement, through the coast range, Cascades, to Central & Eastern OR, you’re spending a good amount of time in corners to get where you’re going.

I originally planned to go with 18 12.5 37’s because I’ve always been a fan of more tire / sidewall on these trucks, but Grapplers, Recons and AT3’s are really difficult if not impossible to source right now in that size. So based on experiences from the big wheel and tire thread, 20x9 13.5 37 with near factory offset seems to be a next best option and that really opens up all those tires. On that size wheel, the 13.5 adds more sidewall back into the equation.

Appreciate any experience on this. Thanks

Are you talking on road vs offroad?

If on road, find the tire that has the most street like tire. After that, the 12.5 in a 37 may be the better size due to geometry and scrub radius etc etc etc.

If you are talking offroad, then things come into play like what looseness the dirt you are on. Like snow, that a skinny tire does better on snow roads… some silt over hard pack, the skinny does better.

Thanks Fifty. On-road / pavement for the handling question, with AT tires. Yep, I know that’s not the purpose or design of any of this, but we have a lot of paved mountain roads out here getting from point a to b in the woods. I’ve always run 12.5’s on my Raptors and agree they are better for snow and general off-road traction. But most off-roading in these parts are mountain fire and forest / logging roads. Aside from snow, not sure that 13.5 vs 12.5 is a big difference for me since these roads are taken at moderate speeds. And I’m more likely to come across wet rocks to crawl up a hillside which is why if I have to go to a 20” rim, I feel like that added 13.5 tire would have benefits. Just wish there was a better selection of 18” tires for us.

I like going fast though curves, and to have the best chance at going through snow and slush in the winter, so I put 295s on the OE wheels.

Knew I wanted to do something to help with the handling before even getting the pickup, and having tires that are the widest allowed on a certain rim width, like the stock setup, is definitely not the way to go.
