Audio Upgrade Without Replacing Audio Components

Update there is no sound dampening in rear floorboard or bulkhead other than carpet and thin pad on rear floor and carpet on rear bulkhead.

This is before and after dynamat install

went ahead and had the front floorboard and front bulkhead done as well. The interior as whole is considerably quieter (I’m running 3” straight pipes) and the audio clarity is kinda hard to explain. The sound fills the space more… sounds more robust - fuller or more full - overall sound is cleaner.

the tech said the storage compartments in the rear floorboard are basically an echo chamber & create a considerable amount of drone noise…

After driving TRX for an hour today I'm 100% sold on the dynamat installation on front & rear floorboard and rear bulkhead. Results are vastly reduced the cabin noise which improved the quality of audio. IMO the best mod I've done on my TRX to date.

100% with you on the installation.

The stereo will start sounding better on it's own, electronics take time to break in. Maybe 50-100hrs. I was in the audio industry for several decades high end home audio components can take 100's of hours to sound their best, it's a real thing.

I’m going the same route, sound deadening and Infinty Reference replacement speakers.

Stupid me for not taking any pictures - sorry!

when you remove the rear seats and then the liner on the rear wall, there’s a (prepare yourself for a highly intellectual term) shit-ton-load of wires across the rear wall.
I removed the factory sub and then was able to line approximately 90% of the area. There are a lot of wires and electronic continents which if you take your time you will be able to work around. One person working alone, perhaps 60-90 minutes.
Here are some pics of when sound deadening material was applied to my TRX full interior rear wall, firewall, floor & all doors.

I'm running straight pipes and can hold a conversation without raising my voice or straining to hear someone talk.

Did the deadening inside the doors help the doors sound less "hollow" when closing them?

I did my doors, back wall and some of the floor. It makes a huge difference. But the main issue with the back wall are those vents. They are just thin slats of rubber open to daylight on the other side. While I was doing the work I drove without the back panel or seats, and they were open most of the time. Let a ton of noise in. I did some deadening on the carpet panel that goes in front of them but no matter what there is a slot in the panel that is open to the vents. Thinking about getting some acoustic foam and giving that a shot. They are necessary and I want them to breathe but not be so noisy.

Yes. There is only a thin strip of dampening from the factory and it seems like cheap junk. Even if you just go through the speaker hole and do everything you can reach, you will get a solid thud and better midbass without adding a ton of weight. Don’t need complete coverage to just dampen the panel.

Bet you are right about the vents. This summer I will be doing a sound deaden to the truck, maybe a slight audio upgrade. Your install is super clean, nice work!

Thanks for pictures and replying to this old thread. Do you know if it is possible to replace the HK 10 inch sub speaker with a slim Infinity REF1000S speaker? I was hoping to replace the speaker and beef up the case to improve performance. Also any idea what fits in the rear ceiling? I’ve been working with Sonny at Cruthfied. He recommended the Reference series when keeping the factory amps. So far I have ordered, REF3032cfx dash, REF9630cx fdoor, REF9632ix rdoor, 72 ft of Kilmat, 20 ft Noico Red. Looking for some STP Biplast for the doors.

Damn. I think I may do this now as well. My wife won't even ride in the truck after I did headers/straight pipes/cats. And it is very loud. I can't have a conversation with my kids either, which, having a 2 year old who enjoys his tantrums hasn't been SO bad, but it would be nice if I could talk to someone else without yelling.

While I understand cost and weight savings, hard to understand why they dont install some sound deadening under the carpets.
Oh well, gives me a summer truck project !

Not sure about the sub but the box is extremely shallow and dinky. Also doubt it gets very much power stock. But the roof speakers are 3.5” like everything else. Crutchfield says you have to remove the headliner but that’s BS. The grills pop off but you have to pull like a mother.

fill it with a foam cutout so you can remove when you need to use the storage? would that work?
