***Got the mirror TT 'money' shot for ya!***
Attended since the late 90's... and this year was the worst. Perhaps it was the absence of Ford/GM, Honda + Mopar/RAM (a week prior)? Maybe the economy is changing along with gratuitous consumer spending? Is it strike related or 'changes in corporate strategy?'.
Did my exterior recon on Monday night (learned years ago no one asks/challenges) wandering the exterior displays/vehicles, some getting last minute detailing/set-up. At 6'/280 with a square Minecraft build my wife says I don't look 'approachable'...so far this urban camo has worked 100%. Blitz of the entire show Tuesday/opening day. Stayed at MGM, rode the monorail to the show... take the TESLA (Boring Tunnel) to the pre-Registration area for credentials, then ride it an approx. mile to the West Hall for breakfast before the official 0900hrs opening...
Saw a few vehicles I've followed IG builds, like a Tacoma on 40's (with 74Weld Portals) and a former Charger Pursuit with a HELLCAT swap. FunHaver, HOONIGAN, Fusion Bumpers and TiS wheels were the prominent branding in the primary lot...but most of Tuesday it was dormant (without attendee/passenger rides in Mustangs, even Raptors of past). Factory Five had a few XTR builds (their 'prerunner' frame/suspension for F150 owners to retrofit).
LEXUS, yes f'ing LEXUS actually showcased some well used/well known (magazine coverage/etc) consumer builds. Toyota's crawler was fun (with the snowmobile like track for high center scenarios). Toyota had both versions of their Land Cruiser on display behind stanchions and bone stock... hardly embracing the aftermarket that will surely follow (and drive vehicle sales?). Heard a few comments related from show goers - also turned off by the large 'THIS VEHICLE IS LOCKED" verbiage on door windows. About as exciting as a Champagne Room enforcing Covid distancing....
EV area with retrofit packages for Street Rods, etc.. including the center seat/Gas Monkey 'Testa'rossa had decent traffic. Overland trend/related vehicles seemed cast outside the West Hall like RV's on side streets in LA.
Seriously felt like SEMA scrambled to fill booth space at the last minute and a lot of apathetic displays reflected my assumption. A few vehicles were regurgitated from past shows.
Simply, there were so few 'WOW' moments.
Planning to return in 24', following my past MO/modus operandi but miss the old days... from GoPro offering a very aggressive discount for SEMA attendees/their newest model to free shirts from Manufacturer booths...and the 'very old days' of JDM models and pre-YT vehicle celebrities that simply wandered the event because they were actually enthusiasts too.
Tim Tebow is the planned headlining speaker, even Margaret Hoover - political analyst that appears on CNN and PBS. WTF has happened to my beloved SEMA Show?
