Driving easy down the highway today... engine shuttered and cut off. Showing a P2172 High Airflow Vaccuum Leak code and a throttle body code.

On the flatbed right now headed to the dealership. At least I have the extended warranty.

Mud Rat, any updates on this? My truck threw the same code this weekend on the way to the beach. Left it at the dealer in North Carolina and took a rental the rest of the way. Dealer cant figure it out and theyre opening a "star case" with stellantis becuase they cant figure it out. Im afraid this will get ugly!

My dealer hasn't even started looking at it yet. They claim to have 4 technicians, 15 scheduled service calls every day, and 30 unscheduled drop offs in line to work in. Supposedly they have moved me up ahead of the other drop offs, so we'll see. My initial research indicated the problem could be anything from a loose wire to catastrophic internal damage.

I'll post any information I get. Let me know if you learn anything on your end.

The dealer finally got the girl into the shop last week and they have determined she dropped a valve and needs a new engine, and he says supercharger.

He's worried about the warranty because I did my own oil changes. Aggravating, because one of the reasons I do them myself is I figure I have a better chance of it being done correctly if I do it.

If you can't successfully fight the warranty claim, then I would look for a reputable performance shop that specializes in hemis. Even if you want to stay stock, they'll be able to source you a motor and install it much quicker and cheaper than that dealership you're dealing with. Best of luck!

Doing your own oil changes does not void your warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Act prevents dealers from weaseling out of a warranty claim for that reason, unless you didn't keep accurate records or used an oil that they can prove caused the failure.

I appreciate that support. Unfortunately the dealer has pointed out the manual says not to exceed 6 months or 6,000 miles between changes. I've owned it over 3-1/2 years and only have 15,000 miles, so I don't change the oil every 6 months.

You'd think that oil life indicator on the dash would supersede everything. That's when the computer Ram installed in the truck directed me to change oil, so that's what I followed.

The dealership has to provide actual evidence that the longer duration between oil changes caused the damage. If they can’t prove it via oil analysis and inspection of the hardware then your warranty is intact. This legal battle has been fought many times before.

Well, Ram warrantied the engine and oil cooler. No new supercharger. Best I can tell they did a good job, but what do I know? Everything looks clean under the hood and my seats and steering wheel aren't coated in grease, so that's good.

I know they're glad to be rid of me and my OCD agitation, but I think it helped. The mechanic pulled me aside and told me he really took his time to make sure everything was done correctly considering the vehicle and its importance to me.

The communication from the dealer was at minimum insufficient. I was rarely contacted with updates, and when I pressed for information I was given dates that they did not meet. It took more than a month for them to even bring it in the shop and assess the problem. My truck, which had rarely spent a night outdoors, cooked in the south Alabama sun the second half of Summer. However, they did press for Ram to warranty the engine, seem to have been careful with the truck and done quality work, detailed it inside and out, and I paid not a penny (not even a deductible). So I'll take that deal and smile. They say it was about $30,000 worth of work.

That's great they took care of it! I honestly wouldn't put much faith in the oil life indicator moving forward though. That's just a guess the computer is making based on your mileage and driving habits. If you are using the factory oil it's proven repeatedly to be out of spec for viscosity in less than 3k miles so I wouldn't even push it half as long as what Ram is suggesting. Not at all saying that's what caused your issue but just my 2 cents so hopefully you get max life out of the new motor.

Lord have mercy, that is a scary thing to look at. Glad you're back in business.
