||================= STORY TIME ================= ||
This all started with the original Comma thread in the forum. https://www.ram-trx.com/threads/anyone-tried-comma-ai-openpilot-on-their-trx.14160/

I daily drive my TRX. It is a result of my hard work and all of the mods have been a result of passion. While I love driving this beast, it doesn't mean every drive is fun, especially on Chicago road conditions and traffic patterns. Is the comma going to be able to take these rough road conditions? Does it have to mount to the glass to get the best performance? It is quite expensive, am I really getting my money's worth? I really built it up in my mind for some reason. So my research started, countless HOURS of youtube videos or social media posts regarding RAM and Comma. Mostly only 2500 or 1500, not really any media concerning Comma 3x and TRX specifically besides a Youtube short.

After contemplating for a while, I pulled the trigger 2024 BLACK FRIDAY to purchase Comma 3x and the wiring harness. $1,098.00 USD

Then I purchased blendmount to mount on rearview mirror.
BM-SP-0001 BlendMount Spare Part, 1-3/8" Body Link, Kit 2
BGP-2000R Aluminum Action Camera, GoPro® HERO Series, BGP-2000R, Standard Mount 1

What a great chance for me to try 3D CAD. So I found pre existing STL files of the Comma 3x mount and go pro mount. V1 was born. I took my a lot of time here because I wanted to make sure of EVERYTHING.
1751038133773.webp

Go to craftcloud.com, use carbon fiber reinforced filament and get it 3d printed. $23.20
I got this piece in the mail and it fit the Comma and blendmount perfectly. I was in shock and awe.

Times go by. Chicago summer hits. Time to finally install. Pop off the plastic housing around the DASM which is the FITCAMX. Making sure not to break the plastic piece above the rearview mirror. Whew.
Install wiring harness, route cable to OBD port along trim. Close everything up. Install BlendMount. Install my 3d printed mount. the bottom tabs holding up the comma break. FULL INTERNAL PANIC.
Also, the blend mount is not extended far forward enough so it feels very far away from the windshield. Was this all a mistake?

Go back to Tinkercad, let's try to shave off material and save money. filament is not gonna be strong enough for the tabs.
1751038689365.webp

Go to CraftCloud, get a quote. $220...... Aluminum sand blasted.
Look for alternatives, find https://www.in3dtec.com/ Price. $48.22
Order 2 more BM-SP-0001.
Part arrives in a week. Mind blown that it arrived from Shanghai that quickly.
Moment of truth. fits on Comma 3x a bit tight. DOES NOT FIT ON GOPRO mount.
Buy sandpaper and grind down the middle of the bunny ears. Asking myself why I put myself through this.
Dremel the middle of the bunny ears because screw too tight. It's now 1030PM.

Go to car, order dinner. Install everything. Connect USB. Start driving. Calibration Success!

||================= TL;DR ================= ||
I dragged my feet because I thought it would be a hard install. Should've installed it quicker.

||================= COMMA 3x ================= ||

So here are my findings! Is it worth the money? If you want to let go of the wheel and have a bit more freedom, then absolutely. Is it perfect? Hell NO.
After using it, it is very clear the Comma 3X is a safety / assist feature not Tesla Autopilot.

- Comma tries to determine which lane you are in and drives accordingly. Say for instance if you are in the left lane of a highway, it will hug the left lane. center lane, it will stay centered. right lane, it will hug the right lane. Something I haven't seen discussed anywhere. For local streets, it will prioritize lane markings over curbs when making a judgement.
- Other videos / users reported even in a straight lane the truck can bounce. This wasn't the case. Straight lines were steady.
- High speed and sudden turns in the middle lane will scare the sh*t out of the lanes next to you especially when road conditions are bumpy. I usually am in the left or right lane. so I don't imagine it being an issue for myself but at 70mphs, comma definitely crossed the lanes a bit.
- Road conditions definitely play a big part of the experience. If you are normally on smooth roads, then comma will also be a smooth experience. Chicago highways have a lot of potholes and uneven surfaces and Comma did have to correct those movements but it definitely stayed in lane.
- I have set my Comma to engage when I turn on adapt cruise control currently and auto lane change when I use the turn signal. Probably going to change these settings around but this has been useful for both local and long distance trips. I will have even more insight once I use it for back to back rush traffic.
- SunnyPilot https://github.com/sunnypilot/sunnypilot
- Comma 3x does work Compustar, IGLA, FITCAMX.

Trading in Comma 3x for Comma 4.
Just finished Comma 4 to GoPro STL
Comma 4 arrived

This is some great info. I don’t realize that the comma was that cheap. I may look into picking one up.

You say "After using it, it is very clear the Comma 3X is a safety feature more so than Tesla Autopilot." Have you spent much time in the driver's seat with Autopilot and how does Comma on the TRX compare?

I find Autopilot pretty good, and better than the hands free driving on the other cars I've spent time with. For example, it seems to understand when you're on a road with no median and gives a bit of a safety margin to the double yellow line. It interprets construction well. And I like the display of what it sees so you can see how it is interpreting the world around it. My only real complaint with Autopilot is that it drives like a new driver, with no intuition about what's going on with nearby cars. Thus, it's often reactionary and not preemptive to the moves those nearby cars make.

I've had it for almost a year now and I love it. I drive to MI and back a couple times a year and I can't imaging doing all that driving without it.

I probably should have worded that better. Comma 3x feels like the lane assist that RAM should have included as a safety feature. It is not like a newbie driver or Tesla Autopilot. The reason I mentioned Tesla Autopilot is because that seems to be the defacto comparison in other comma videos or AI driver / driver assist function. At this point, Tesla FSD and Autopilot are miles ahead.

I hate that I waited so long and dragged my feet. I'm commuting to Chicago multiple times a week hands free now. Can't wait to go cross country

What branch/settings/driving model are you running? Just got mine installed and it likes to cross the line in turns.

I use the SunnyPilot model. I have no problems with it. But not sure what you mean by crossing the lines in turns. Are you wanting the Comma to make turns for you? Not sure it is set up to do that. Going straight is pretty much all I've asked it to do and it does it fantastically.

I also use sunnypilot. It changes lanes by itself very well too!

What I meant by crossing the lane lines in curves is on highway at high speed. It's not always but sometimes it will try to be conservative and oversteer so that the tires touch the lines while the truck is on a bend. Just trying to make it clear to folks that it isn't a 100% stay in the center of the lane and that road conditions and circumstances play a part. Regardless of the gripes or quirks, still glad I did it. It does do a fantastic job on straight lines, even with terrible Chicago road conditions.

Yes, I’m using the comma as well and love it. Obviously, it’s not a completely self driving setup, but has worked almost perfectly here in Texas. Tighter turns need assistance, but works better than anything else on my vehicles.

Curious as to the installed pics as @AmosMoses hooked me up with some mounts that work well with the FitCam but I do have an old blend mount I’m not using right now…

Interesting. I've not had any issues with crossing over lines. it does hug the line, but that is what it is modeled to do. I've found in my experience on the highway that it does a better job than I do in not crossing lines! it has made my cross country trips waaaay more pleasant. I do crossword puzzles and play cards with my wife!

Better than your 2025 Lexus? If so, can you elaborate?

I've spent a bunch of time in a 2024 Lexus with lane keeping, and so that's a useful frame of reference for me. My main complaints with the Lexus are akin to my prior comment about Tesla - i.e., driving like a novice with no intuition about what other cars are about to do. The Lexus system isn't as good around corners as the Tesla, as it'll hug the double yellow line if its on the inside of a corner. And the Lexus system is more easily confused by construction.

Much better than the Overtrail. I was hoping the Lexus would be just as good as the Comma given its price point, but it’s not. The Comma does hug the lines, but it works well regardless. I’ve driven many Tesla Y rental cars and they’re probably similar to the Comma from what I remember, but the TRX has probably 5000 miles with the Comma and has never “freaked out” from road conditions like the Teslas have on me. Three times has a Tesla just slammed on its brakes during cruise control for no reason while I was driving and once did the system start veering sharply to the left at highway speeds and almost sent me into a barrier.

In the end, I believe there is no perfect system and you must be aware to take over while driving any of these advanced cruise control systems.

Helpful, thank you. I might shell out the $1100 for a Comma and mounting kit. Anything else I need?

Wiring harness for RAM 1500. the install and getting it up and running is a bit too easy so if you can afford it, it's worth it.

Hi -- I came upon this thread as I too am investigating using a BlendMount to mount my Comma 3x.

@mistaHAN would you kindly share the STL files you used or a link to them on one of the community 3D print sharing sites?

Thanks!
