It’s been a blast, but the time has come to move on. Sold the TRX today. Had 35,500 miles on it with nothing but a noisy water pump at 32K miles. It was a ton of fun, but thinking about owning it with no warranty scared the crap out of me. An extended warranty was 6-7K and tires were going to need to be replaced in another 15K miles (6 months for me). Oddly enough, I’m taking a step backwards and replacing it with a 1998 Dodge 2 WD 3500 Quad Cab with a 12 V Cummins and a 5 speed. The KDP and 5th gear nut have already been fixed and she is a very clean survivor.

We are in an extended move to Tennessee from Illinois over the next 18-24 months and the simplicity and economy of the Cummins just won out.

Coming up on 36k miles on mine too. Of course the drive train is still covered out to 5/60 but I bought the extended warranty recently from Granger so I know what you were feeling.

Anyway, good luck, and who knows, maybe you'll come back. (I did) ;)

good luck. On the flip side i can understand with the old ram with the 5.9 cummins. I have two old ford OBS 7.3 diesels with the 5spd and i much prefer driving those sometimes. Funny how times change, learn to appreciate the simpler things.

Because those trucks freakin rock and didn’t have stupid infotainment systems. If I could swap out u connect and screens for a tape deck/fm radio I’d do it in a heartbeat

We just did a radio in someone’s vehicle and removed a tape deck with a Mariah Carey tape in it, made me feel really old 😑

lol the one thing I’m adding to my 98 is a iPad mount for navigation

I’m coming up on 35k miles and was thinking about getting the extended warranty, could share price they quoted? Thanks

I understand when someone says “this vehicle is bullet proof” or something to that effect. That only goes so far, meaning at some point it will require huge maintenance or overhaul.

Yes it’s extremely reliable, but after 26 years and how many hundred thousand miles does it now require a large amount of maintenance?

A vehicle can be solid up until the 20 year mark or 300K but blow up at 301K.

Or are trucks like this just stupid cheap to fix and maintain? I have never owned an older diesel so have no idea on an engine/trans overhaul cost.

Lot's of options. Free quotes at the link below. No need to enter your email, name, etc to get the quote. I went with the 5 year Added Care Plus option w/$200 deductible for $1410. I think prices have gone up a little recently but that seemed to be the best deal for me.

The 12V Cummins is the engine that gave them the image of being bulletproof. They are completely mechanical with no electronics whatsoever. You can bumpstart it rollling it dawn a hill and dumping the clutch with no battery whatsoever. The 94-98 specifically with the P7100 injection pump is known to go 1,000,000 miles without an overhaul. (There are some out there with over 3,000,000 miles)If you keep it stock or close to stock the NV4500 trans holds up great behind them except for an issue with a nut on the OD gear coming loose, but that has been addressed in the truck I bought. Also being pre emissions this truck got 22 MPG on my trip home. Stock it makes 215 HP, guys mod them to over 1000 with stock bottom ends so as you can imagine they are pretty understressed at 200.

That said the drivetrain of the TRX doesn’t scare me, it’s the 900$ tail lights and 2000$ headlights that bother me. Along with the fact that at 35K miles in 2 1/2 years the console lid, steering wheel and drivers seat are already showing early stages of wear. I use my truck as a truck, and I expect that. I just felt it was a good time to jump ship especially considering I sold it for 92,400$ and I got for 88K out the door with the shell installed new from Granger.

There’s nothing wrong with that. If something goes wrong you can just get another iPad. I don’t like having a built in off brand iPad that likes to lock up, glitch, or just not work at all sometimes.

Sitting at nearly 35k on my 22. Still debating on getting rid of it myself. I’m a gambler so not to worried about the extended warranty since the powertrain warranty is good for awhile.

I bought the extended warranty when I got my truck new. I had the same worries as @Murfman at the time of purchase. When I hit 75,000 miles I’ll start thinking about my options.

I figured it was time especially when I was offered 4400$ more than I paid. The 4400 covered the running boards, bedrug, and oil changes. Can’t complain about 2 plus years of trouble free driving in an Apex predator for free.

I got the extended warranty too. I'll keep the TRX. my 9 year old already asked for it ...heck who knows by then there maybe a few wrecked Demon 170's where we can shoe-horn that into the TRX.
