Ram 2023 TRX
I’ve got some concerns about my 2023 Ram TRX that I bought last September with only 38 miles on it. The dealership told me it was technically "used" because the original owner purchased it just to resell it and make some money. I thought that was odd since the dealership is a certified Ram dealer—why not just order a new one from Ram directly and skip the middleman?

Recently, I dug into the truck’s history and found some unsettling details. It turns out the truck was registered in Washington about a month before I bought it in Van Nuys, but the dealership never mentioned it was previously registered out of state. What's even more confusing is that the odometer showed 78 miles at one point but then 38 miles when I bought it. How could it be registered in Washington in late July and show up in Van Nuys less than a week later?

I’m wondering if this could be a mistake or if the odometer might’ve been rolled back. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know what could be going on here? Any insight would be appreciated!

Maybe just a clerical error by someone on the mileage 🤔

Rollback is very doubtful. Nobody but Ram’s vendor can change the mileage on these digital clusters. Not even dealers can. Believe me, those of us who swapped are trying.

With a clean title and no known history, I’d say a simple ‘mistake’…at least it’s not a mistake of thousands of miles which may require more digging perhaps. Reputable Dealerships (especially a manufacturer dealership) don’t want to mess with legalities of passing off vehicles with altered mileages/VINs/etc…just my opinion.

I would not worry about the odo discrepancy, like others said likely a clerical error transposing numbers. Not a roll back, but you could ask the dealership if they can correct the record.
Dusty engine. If the dealership is next to a busy road, the cars will build up dust super quick. I just bought a brand new side by side, that sat in the dealers lot for 3-4 months. The dealership sits right next to I-25 here in CO, there is a TON of dust on the engine, under the engine cover. With only about 5 minutes on the hour meter.

Good call on the mention of contacting the dealer in regards to the mileage…I’d def do that…

The conspiracy theorist in me was immediately thinking oh shit, it's a stolen truck with a changed vin. Hence the mileage discrepancy 🤦.
Motor probably got dusty on its trip from up north to the dealer you bought it from. And just sitting wherever it was parked 👍🏻

If you think the engine's dusty now, just wait till you drive it down a gravel road a couple times

But seriously, if it was bought in Washington and transported by trailer to California that's where your dust came from...

My engine compartment was pretty dusty when my truck was delivered with 19 miles on it, because it sat in the Toledo Raceway storage lot for about 2 months before it was delivered to the dealership.

I hear you, But then how do you explain It being registered in washington and less than a week later, it be in van nuys,

The odometer discrepancy is probably a flub from the dealer that entered the initial titling paperwork in WA. Happens frequently.

The titling issue doesn't strike me as odd. Guy buys it in WA and the dealer from which he bought submits the title to WA state. That probably takes 2-6 weeks depending on how long WA takes to process their registrations. Title is actually issued one week before it arrives in Van Nuys, but actual time elapsed could be several weeks/months. Carfax may show it was just titled, but I see no issue with it being CA a week later. The guy that bought it might have prearranged the sale to the Van Nuys dealer before he even got the truck in his posession.

I'd be concerned if the dealer from which you bought had NOT told you it was technically a used truck. I'd ask them to verify the warranty start date since you bought it used. You probably have all but one or two months of the warranty in place depending on when the first owner purchased it.

Well, the trucks actually at the dealership The coolant pump went out its Definitely still under warranty

Dealerships will “trade” vehicles at times…just spitballing

I promise you there is, A couple years back I was at a late Cousins house, and he would hang out with this Albanian dude I recal him showing us a video were the turnung back on the odometer on digital gauge cluster was being preformed, he went on to say it's not uncommon. So it's absolutely possible I've seen it

Send me your VIN, and I'll check to see if it's a VIN swap. It's more likely a clerical error.

Wasn’t saying it’s impossible to change mileage on all digital clusters. I’ve personally done it on the older ones. But nobody has cracked the 2023+ Ram digital cluster yet. Lots of people have been working on it and have so far failed, so the idea that some random dealer rolled it back is implausible, and I would even argue impossible at this point in time.

If you still insist, get AlfaOBD and connect to the PCM. Read the system status, and scroll down until you see the mileage readings from the four wheel speed sensors. They won’t match each other (or the cluster odometer) perfectly since obviously not every wheel turns at the exact same speed all the time. But any big rollback discrepancy will be apparent.

In my case there’s a ~20,000 mile difference because nobody can change the digital cluster I swapped in. Albanian or otherwise.
