Limited at 118 mph

You guys realize it takes little to zero skill to go fast in a straight line?
if we are talking legitimate drag racing or 1/2-full mile events that’s a different story.
Just because a Nissan Altima has the ability to go 120 if you take the speed limiter off doesn’t mean it has any business going that fast….

It’s having sufficient testosterone to realize it’s a dumb idea.

Edit: closed course or an area where you will be the only one injured, by all means go for it.
Not on a road that a parent is just trying to take the kids to get ice cream and your dumbass plows into them going 140.

What do ya mean, "zero skill"....... and it wasn't no "straight line"! I was weaving all over the place!
I have Lynyrd Skynyrd playin "Freebird" on the 8 track, flipping through songs with one hand...While holding a Micky;s Big Mouth in the other hand....AND hitting 180 on the ZX14R !!! Now, that takes some SKILL!!!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Oh yeah, only IN Mexico....

Not sure why anyone is assuming the OP will only do high speed in a straight line. The accident last year with the teenagers in the TRX that killed folks were on a highway but died when they took a curve at 100 mph. People are dumb.

You are assuming race car drivers are smart enough to know how to handle power. They too buy TRX's and crash/roll them flooring it taking an on ramp. Ask me how I know.

Stupid people doing stupid things winning stupid prizes making the rest of us look bad. Don't be a deuchebag.

Well said!

20+years of riding Gixers/Busas/ZX14r spent a LOT of time well into triple digits.... Reflecting at age 55 at the insanity/invincible sentiment of the early riding years (tank tops/no helmets with similar 'seat cover' (18yr old female passengers) I never had 'the big accident'.

Ironically it was the years as a 👮‍♀️🚔 that made me realize how often folks including fellow LEOs (who often target fixated while trying to multi-task too) have very little immersion in how fast hazards/corners/etc. come up at higher speeds (nor related experience with braking/steering and other levels of input, let alone actually inspecting their vehicle prior). Watch some Arkansas State Police (Trooper Byrd) YouTube videos for some great 'OH SHIT' moments/mistakes/bad judgement examples from those pursued not familiar with triple digit dynamics LOL.

However, like Mav' taking the Darkstar to Mach 10 but knowing there is more left and curious as to 'what it could do'... I get the question.🚀 and wouldn't mind posting a 119mph Top Speed pic (like Spinal Tap's amps going to 11!).:D
Speed is relative. Maybe its a street bike thing. Unless you've pushed that threshold you don't get it. Going 118 in a TRX is comfy like being in a La-Z-Boy recliner. Pushing 200 on a 2 wheel Jap rocket feels like a time machine.

Which sounds dumber:

200 mph in a car that actually makes downforce on tires rated for it with brakes that aren’t under sized

-or-

120 mph in a floaty lifted truck on off road tires with base model brakes

Yes, the truck floats along in a straight line without an issue at 120mph because the aero, suspension, tires, etc aren’t designed to actually create downforce, maximize chassis rigidity, etc for stability or handling. You’re just relying on a little bit of toe on the alignment to stay stable. But it would handle like garbage as soon as you had to swerve.

Well, yeah. Taking a TRX through the Tail of the Dragon pedal to the metal is retarded. 118 for a few seconds down a straightaway, meh.

Well I took my Challenger (a 200 mph car) to 180 and I've driven my TRX to 140 so far. The Challenger started to feel light in the front end a little before 180 (that's why I let off), and the TRX was still well planted at 140.

So you put enough lateral G into the TRX to determine there was adequate downforce at 140?

My truck maxed out at 117. That was in a dry lake bed in Mexico though. Things happen real fast at those speeds we had the lake bed controlled to minimize variables. Doing a 100+ on a trail shortly after was quite the pucker factor as the truck basically skipped along the top of the road and sand. I probably won’t go that fast again until I make amends with the man upstairs.

FWIW, another interesting observation for those of you that have (or that are contemplating) bypassing the TRX speed limiter. I have found it's better to shift the transmission in manual mode at higher speeds rather than leaving it in full auto. Seems to help keep the RPM's down better in the higher gears.

Do they not wrap all the way back around to 0? I remember the old festivas did that with a 80 mph speedo 🤣
I spent a few years behind the wheel of those little cars, doing different engine swaps the most fun one was a V6 from a probe into a festiva

Yeah, let's buy a six figure truck with a hellcat engine and drive it like a pussy. Take your tampons out boys (and women if there are on here). You might as well go buy a Raptor. (Uh oh, I just hurt some feelings) lol. And yes, I'm the guy who does 140mph. To the OP, take the limiter off and have fun man, but be realistic with your skill level. To those who haven't taken their truck 140+, stop talking like you know what this truck is capable of. It doesn't handle like a Porsche, but it's capable under the right conditions. Consumers have been pushing vehicles to the limit and street racing from the dawn of muscle cars fueled by aspirations before muscle cars, which has led to the great vehicles we have today. It wasn't from people with the frame of mind of limiting vehicles to a speed limit. That's government regulation crap so people won't be sued. The only limiter back in the day, and today in my opinion, is the red line. Should you or shouldn't you take the limiter off? Only you know and can regulate yourself. Know your vehicle, know your skill level, be smart, be safe, but PLEASE have fun.

My first vehicle was a Ford Festiva. 4 Speed manual with like 60hp, but I drove it like it was a race car, lol. Could only make it over 80mph going down a steep hill, lol. Ah, the good times.

The way I look at it.......the speed limiter saves me from a myriad of compound traffic infractions, including felony speeding.
So its kinda like the little angle on my right shoulder....telling me to simmer down now.
Compared to the little devil on my left shoulder.....telling me to FLOOR it! Cheers !
118mph on the street is still a felony, and yes I've hit it a few times. Zero to 118 is still a thrill at this stage of my life, been there and done that, 84 kawasaki gpz1100 145mph, 87ninja 1000r 160mph, 92 zx11 170mph, 99 hayabusa 190mph had way more to go, 05 hayabusa 170's, 07 m109r 120mph wobble, 82rx7 1teens ,89 gt5.0 140mph, 95 M3 160mph (limiter removed), 99 cobra stang 145mph, at this time i slowed down,11 bmw 550 120's, 15 macan S120's, 17 panamera 4s 120's, 21 911 sad but yes 130's, (all fast except my 21 4runner trd pro! traded for the 22 beast.)

Kinda just proved a lot folks points on here. We know nothing about the OP but the way in the which the question was asked does not suggest someone who grew up learning to drive a manual and has had a slow development of driving faster and faster cars while learning along the way. Sounds like you did and that’s why you learned. Since $100k doesn’t pass as all that much for a car anymore and I see TRXs parked in high school parking lots…how well do you think things would have gone for you if you had a TRX at 18 without the limiter? Point being that experience takes time and having limits enforced on you (like only 60hp) ensures that time elapses.

Back in the day, pretty sure most of us ran our first car(s) like they were race cars. On the corners, lots of 14" rubber rolling under and rubbing off the white walls! How is the new engine build going?

Yep, back in the late 60's when I first started driving, I'd top out every car I had whenever I had a chance. Of course most of the junkers I had were doing good to hit~120. Same with my motorcycles. I usually ran used bias belted tires and sometimes recaps on my cars. I threw a few recaps over the years but I never had a blowout at any speed.
