So I purchased my extended Mopar warranty from Granger back in Jan 2023 due to their discount pricing. I got an email from Granger tonight saying that Florida will not allow Florida residents to purchase Mopar warranties out of state at a discounted price.

So I have to cancel my contract and get a pro-rated refund. That means it will cost me quite a bit more to re-purchase this same coverage since my truck is now a year and a half older with more mileage. I would have thought Granger would have been aware of this restriction when they offered their discount pricing to Florida residents.

So if you live in Florida and purchased an extended Mopar warranty from Granger stand by. And if you are planning to buy an extended warranty do not buy it from Granger. I assume they probably won't sell to Florida anymore anyway.

you should get a full refund, not a prorated refund. Smells like bullshit to me

yeah, they sent me an email for a vehicle that i sold and cancelled the contract. I asked what vehicle you are talking about and they asked my VIN #. Dont cancel anything, they can't cancel your contract

yes, you are correct, they removed Florida from their website.

I don’t think it’s a matter of granger wanting to cancel it. It’s the states laws that don’t allow it. This was the place we got our previous ford’s extended warranty from and I tried out a Florida zip code and gave me the red letters.

I was wondering if they can actually cancel it like that. I plan to look into this a bit further before doing anything.

Seems to me either 1) Granger misrepresented their authority to sell these policies when they advertised the product or 2) Florida has since changed their policy which should only apply to policies sold after the policy change, not before.

I have some research to do.

That may be but when I talked to Granger about purchasing the policy they knew I lived in Florida. And that was a year and a half ago. Granger aggressively advertises their discount pricing but never mentioned that any states were excluded. Had I known that I would have never purchased it from them.

As a vendor on this forum I had a high level of confidence in Granger and I know many have purchased through their program. But it doesn't seem that I should be financially penalized because Granger sold these policies in Florida inappropriately or if Florida changed their policy/law that it would be enforced retroactively. Gonna have to figure out what the deal is here.

they sold the contract to Florida address. I think they made a mistake and it's costing them $$ and now they want people to cancel and register to out of state address to they can recoup the loss.

Florida did not change the law; Florida does not allow discount on extended warranties to avoid fraud ( not sure how they come to that conclusion)

Granger sold the warranty and it's registered and you are just fine. They want to fix it to help themselves with their discounted price, i think mopar came back and ask them to get paid on full value because discount is not possible in Florida. You don't have to cancel anything, i don't know if they can force you or do it without your approval, they keep saying it's an administrative issue but not giving the actual reason but it's pretty easy to figure that out.

I would go to a .gov consumer affairs advocate and tell them youre pissed and you want a full refund.

I agree and appreciate your input. In looking at the contract section that pertains to when they (not me) can cancel the policy, I do not see this situation giving them the authority to cancel my contract.

In my initial email to them before I purchased the contract I specifically told them I live in Florida so it is no surprise to them. They claim this just came to their attention last week which is not my problem the way I see it.

Yes for sure. I am going to be reaching out to some different resources today. Sent Granger a response email outlining my concerns so I am interested to see how they plan to handle this. They didn't start off on the right foot. Quite disappointing since I thought they had a strong reputation.

I just got the same email from Granger, I'm going to use my NY address and have it transferred there.
Also be advised if you plan on getting a refund there maybe be a fee for cancellation?

I had noticed that as well. My first response email back to Granger was disappointing as they did not address any of my questions but only rephrased what was said in the original email. One of my questions was about a cancellation fee. They did say they will "advocate with Mopar...to try to maximize the refund".

They also said Mopar would be cancelling the policies but unsure when that will begin.

I don't have any homes out of state so that is not an option for me. They said I could use the address of a friend or relative that lives out of state and that would work. I have some of those but frankly that doesn't sound right to me and I'm really not interested in playing that game when I made a straight up legitimate purchase from them for a product that they now say they cannot deliver. (Over a year later)

If I had the option you have I would do that as well.

Granger sold a warranty in a manner that contravenes Florida law. They're on the hook. Why would Mopar cancel it? Mopar didn't sell the warranty at a discount.

You should probably talk to a lawyer about the Florida law and the contract provisions.

Dang. Was just about to look into buying one of these from Granger. Anyone know of a Florida dealer that does a discount? Or does the Florida law say not even a Florida dealer can offer a discount? FFS there is so much fraud in this state, I wonder why they chose this to regulate.

Florida requires requires a separate warranty registration which they may have no done. We had to do that in order to sell Extend Product Warranties in this state so I'm sure the same process applies to them.

Florida law prohibits it, so as far as I can tell if you are a Florida resident you cannot buy extended warranty at a discounted price. Falls under the "insurance" category so there are statutory restrictions. Apparently the work around is using an out of town address (either a second home or address of friend or relative). Not really sure how legal that would be but that is what they recommended to me. I am not going to do that.

I didn't realize this when I purchased my extended warranty through Granger and they didn't tell me until over a year later and now want to cancel my policy and only provide a pro-rated refund. I think us Florida residents are out of luck on these discounted extended warranties. I wish I would have known that to begin with.

Are you going to take the pro-rated refund? Or fight them about selling you a bad policy? Doesn't seem correct for them to take money from you for something that was invalid. They are doing this to the California residents as well, myself included. Super frustrating.

Also, switching the policy to a "friend's or relative's" address, curious to hear your logic for not pursuing this option? I'm a bit uncomfortable with it myself, but if the policy is enforceable/allowable, I may go that route instead of re-purchasing at a higher price?
