Hi all,

The first mod I ll be doing will be to add a bedrack so I can set my rooftop tent there (well a bedtop tent now).
I have a Frontrunner roof rack and rooftop tent for my JK currently and both are awesome.

I have two questions that you may be able to answer:
1) what are the exact dimensions of the bed external dimensions (e.g full length and width( and internal dimensions, including between wheel arches. I know the bed is a 5.7" but I d need more precisions
2) Have you foudn good options to put a rack on top of the trifold tonneau cover (i am ok to not be able to fold it up and crawl in the bed)

Thanks in advance

The bed for the TRX is the exact same as all the short bed Ram 1500s from 2019 to 2021 so if you are shopping for them just specify that you have a 2019 or newer ram 1500 with the 5.7 bed and if the manufacturer says it will fit you will be good to go on the TRX....the only problem you might run into is the TRX has a camera mounted above the rear sliding window for the rear view mirror camera system and a roof rack you get might block that camera and make the rear view camera feature useless

Thanks for the answer Brad, much appreciated, especially the point about the rear mounted cam.

The length should be the same (5.7) but is the width also the same? I read that the TRX is 8" wider than the regular 1500 so I would have thought that the bed would also be wider.
Isn t it the case?

Yes, bed width is the same. The added width is from the extended fenders, the bed itself isn‘t wider.

Thanks a lot

That solves it then.
I ll try and find a 1500 without rambox to measure the dimensions properly then.

The bed only widens beneath the bedrails in the rear fender area, the inner bed and rails look the same.

Depending on what length RTT you have you might have to decide if it goes behind the cab above the cab, in the last case the GPS antenna might be in the way. I have the largest James Baroud on my PW behind the cab, and I doubt it will work that way with the 5'7 bed on the TRX. other things to consider are center of gravity, need for a rolling bed cover and the space you want and need underneath the tent

Really cool setup.
it sits Just below the roof line so I guess it doesn t impact fuel consumption besides the extra weight.

yeah but on the other hand getting into the bed is not easy, definitly suggesting a roll cover here and not the OEM trifold cover. Also my Thuren suspension with king shocks is valved rather soft which is great for for everyday use, but too soft for the tent, a large awning and all the other weight.

This is something I want to do right away. With the soft suspension though, probably a good idea to get Timbrens or something similar to help with the load. Otherwise the truck is going to sag pretty aggressively.

what brand is that rack? Looks great

Self built from 60mm Aluminium pipes and elbows.
At the time there was only one RAMbox-usable Rack, and that was unavailabe as well. As I'm in Germany container logistics from North America for larger and heavier pieces takes months and is not cheap so I decided to built one with a friend.

If you're interested in more versatility you may want to consider a tonneau cover like Retrax Pro XR or Pace Edwards utlragroove metal. Both of these covers have T-slot integration so you can mount cross bars (Rhino rack, Thule, Yakima, etc.) over the top of the bed and still have all the space inside the bed available for storage.

The cross bars can hold quite a bit of weight and many folks put tents, bikes, kayaks, snowboards, and so much more on top of the cross bars. Yakima has some really cool accessories like the overhaul HD tower bars that support all kinds of usage that hold things on the sides as well as support heavy weight on top. These tower bars also have adjustable height so you can use them for variety of applications.

Also you can get the EXACT bed dimensions if you go to Ram website and build a TRX, then scroll down to the summary and click on the link "standard features" then you can expand "Dimensions and Capacities" and this will give you the following:

EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS
  • Cargo Area - Bed Height21.4
  • Cargo Area - Bed Length67.4
  • Cargo Area - Bed Width Wall66.4
  • Cargo Area - Bed Width Wheel51.0

Another reason these systems are awesome is they are NOT permanent, no drilling/cutting to install, and can be removed... so many application varieties based on your own lifestyle and preference.

Here is a video that's a little extreme on the possibilities, but gives you an idea for reference:
