Anybody try this 3rd brake light camera relocation kit yet??

Just trying to build the kit from scratch lol. Comes out way cheaper than 300$. Problem is the metal bracket I can’t find anywhere.
U got part #s or links for all the other stuff handy? I dont think that metal bracket will be of any use on my end. Will have to bolt it to my rack or suction cup it to my roof with a telescoping camera mount :ROFLMAO:

So i just went through 19 pages on the 5th gen Ram forum and watched some guy extend his cable on YT. My concern is running a new cable all the way from the rear view mirror through the headliner down 1 of the pillars (and somehow out of the truck), then along the frame to the bed, up the bed and onto a rack might take upwards of 30+ feet which could cause connectivity/signal issues. The only cable i've found that i know would work is 10ft so i'd need 3 of those and 3 male to male adapters. Sounds like a lot of potential for water intrusion, signal loss, jiggling loose/etc. And the cost of all that cable is like $55-60 bucks + $130-160 for the camera + like $25 in corrugated tubing to protect the cable = dam close to that kit which comes with the bracket and the little metal housing which would be nice protection. I digress. I'm still on only 2.5 hrs of sleep and jsut drove 10 hours to the moutnains.

See ya tmrw!

Why run a cable from the rearview instead of just extending the one in the third brake light? Just disconnect the current camera, leave it in place, and plug in the new one, no?

If you guys can find a parts list that's way cheaper, I may design up a 3D printed housing for the camera. I can make a few extras no problem.

So if we extend the one in the third brake light, we would either have to:

(1) run the cable out of the hole in the third brake light, which would then result in a water intrusion problem unless we could completely seal the hole that the cable is coming out of (which I don’t have faith in myself being able to do)

OR (2) we would have to pull down the headliner near the 3rd brake light (which I’m not a huge fan of b/c im worried I’ll F up an airbag lol) and then find a way to route the extended cable back down the rear window and down one of the rear pillars, out the truck, along the frame, and to wherever we plan to mount the camera.

#2 is probably the better choice IMO but I do have some experience with option number #1 since I installed the fit cam dash cam

EITHER WAY, I’d be 100% on board with a 3d printed housing so put me on that list!

Side note: I found one for $68 brand new cam on eBay so im 100% in this project now whether i end up routing it up my own ass to save the copay in a few years 😂

My idea was to extend from 3rd brake cam connection. Just figure it out as I go.

I purchased this cable….
https://a.co/d/3pqZThN It’s 20feet long. Others in the forum have used it with no issues. I purchased to two of them. One 20feet and one 10 feet.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!! I was going to order like 6 different cables (male to male) and female to female and it would be a disaster haha

What is your tentative plan for routing the extension cable(s) from the 3rd brake cam?

I was thinking down the column and into/ under the hidden bin on the floor. Drill a small enough hole to pass the wire and place a rubber grommet to avoid water or debris from coming in. Zip tie it together with other wires that go to the rear of the truck and go up via the rear lights and into the bed.

There's gotta be another way outta the cab without having to drill. I ran my side mirror ditch lights through the doors along the existing wire loom. Might have to run them the wrong way for a bit to find a way out, but if I drill a hole in those bins, they'll be full of water on the next mud run :ROFLMAO:

On another note, if you have the camera and the wire already, what are you still waiting on for install? A bracket to mount and/or protect it?

Exactly I just need a bracket/mount. I was thinking of creating something but haven’t tackled this project yet. Waiting on some warm weather.

The other way out the cab is via the grommet located under the steering wheel. The wires that lead out to the engine.

Yea that spot would be ideal for running the cable directly from the rear view mirror. To run it from the 3rd brake light back to engine bay and then back to the rear bumper would be a lot of cable and potential for connectivity issues/etc I would imagine. And could you imagine running all that wire to find out the screen flickers b/c it's 60' long

Regardless of which path you take. I would hope you’ll test it before you do all the work 🤣
