Just reading through this thread. Absolutely despicable failure of the police who should have tracked this down instead of waiting hours and then only driving by its location. I know we aren’t supposed to get political on this forum but it’s hard not too. There is only one party that is always on the wrong side of what is right. As a tax payer it’s hard to take.

Sorry about this happening @thewestwon. Hope the shop and insurance can get you fixed up. Hate that violation took place.

Wonder if the police were able to use the data they received from the truckers to go shut down the theft ring located in that shop you had highlighted? Would love to see some news on that. I too live on the North Side and hate that the lawless thugs are moving out to The Woodlands and points north. FM 1960 has been lost for a while now, but no excuses. People have to drive to work and park.

Thugs just take advantage of the terrible policies instituted by the sick and twisted politicians in Harris County. This truly is a case of being too soft on crime, and anyone with common sense can figure out which party is 100% responsible for all this. You know they have a saying: "You will own nothing and be happy about it..." I reject that disordered logic. Best of luck on closing this ordeal out.

Guess I need to research additional security options now before my order is delivered...

So Harris County doesn't arrest and prosecute car thieves?

Car thieves don't spend a lot of time in jail...that's not a party issue, that's a justice system issue. Plea deals, plea deals, plea deals

Penalties for Vehicle Theft

Thefts are classified under Texas law according to the value and nature of the property stolen. The more valuable the stolen property, the more severely the theft is punished. A prosecutor may rely on the fair market value of the property or its replacement value.

Penalties range from a class C misdemeanor to a first-degree felony. Theft of a vehicle worth less than $2,500 is a misdemeanor and any theft above that amount constitutes a felony. A person who steals a vehicle worth between $2,500 and $30,000 commits a state jail felony, punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and between 180 days and two years in jail. If the vehicle is valued between $30,000 and $150,000, the person faces third-degree felony charges, punishable by two to ten years imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000. You can find a further breakdown of theft penalties in our article on Texas Misdemeanor and Felony Theft.

You don't realize who runs Harris County? It's always areas under a certain party's control that have these issues. it's an under-incarceration problem that can be traced directly to the pro-criminal policies of that political party.

Ultimately whether there are laws on the books and harsh penalties or not, the problem is bad enough that those penalties just don't matter. The thieves have such a low risk of getting caught that there's no incentive not to commit the crime.

In my case, the cops had no interest in checking out the cars on the other two haulers loaded up when I recovered my truck. They just let the drivers go and got some presumably BS info on who paid to ship the truck. Cleary the cops had no interest in hunting the truck down right when it got stolen (or they didn't have the resources). Not to go too political, but I get it. I'm sure budgets are tight and they're understaffed; this wasn't a crime that put me in any physical danger. So in the current status quo, I'm not surprised. Could everything be better? Sure.

Just look at how much is being spent for the auto theft task force ($14mil / yr and they want $6mil more) in Harris Co vs the continued volume of thefts. It's wild. I honestly don't think a change in local politics would make much of a difference at this point.

Best I've got is to get a Ravelco, keep the deductibles tolerable on insurance, be cognizant of loan gap, and DO NOT make any attempt to recover a vehicle after it's stolen (unless you want to deal with all of that drama).

Sorry, it's just not that easy. It takes a long time to put a car thief in jail and a lot of money followed by short sentences (that's a state issue). Keep telling yourself that's the problem. Your insurance covers these losses so there's not a lot of real incentive to fix it.

Take whatever precautions you can and have great insurance.

I live in Virginia which has been primarily blue even though 95% of the land area is red. I find it ironic it's one of the safest and yet the average jail time for car theft is 1 year OR less in Virginia. It's also not a state that allows the protection of movable property by deadly force.

Which states are the worst for car theft?

The worst states for car theft may surprise you. After analyzing arrest and theft records, we found that:

  • The worst states for car theft are New York, Colorado and Oregon.
  • New York City also lays claim to the highest count of motorcycle thefts in the United States.
  • Car theft rates in New York, Colorado, and Oregon may be especially high due to critical shortages of law enforcement in these states over the past three years.
  • According to our analysis, your car will likely be safest from vehicle theft in the northeastern states of Virginia, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
  • Virginia, Massachusetts and New Jersey also rank within the top 11 safest states, according to the crime rate.

Word for word.. 100% accurate.

My county in Florida is red and upon thousands of people from NJ NY and OH they're almost tilting it. I never could understand why leave and bring your same voting style that destroyed your place of origin into your new place?
Also as soon as all these people flocked here, crime magically started rising too.

Yeah…definitely an under-incarceration problem. See any other advanced democracies up there?

Well if anyone is keeping track, 154 days after my truck was stolen, I picked it up from the body shop yesterday. Much to my surprise, both insurance and the body shop got their act together after I went nuclear. Still waiting on a few interior pieces to come in which aren't a big deal and one minor spot on the front fender I'm being OCD about, but I'm overall satisfied with the second attempt of actually fixing it properly. Feels very nice to be done with all the drama.

So are you getting an Igla or Ravelco?
I had the ravelco guys out to install before the rear window even got replaced back when I first recovered it. Very happy with the ravelco. Hasn't been stolen or attempted to be stolen since, for what that's worth.
