Hi all - trying to figure out an issue here… I just completed my first oil change at 4500 miles. I was very thorough to drain all engine oil as well as the oil cooler for a good long while until nothing came out. I changed the filter and let drain as well. I used the mopar factory filter and 7 quarts of Amsoil Signature Series 0W-40 synthetic. I read 7 quarts in the book but saw a few places that 7.5 quarts was what it took. I filled with 7 quarts and called it good. After initial start up and shut down for 15 minutes before checking the oil, I was showing 3/4 up the waffle and called it good. I just checked the oil this morning before starting just to be sure all engine oil drained overnight and I’m showing about 1/4” above the waffle on 7 quarts of oil. Can anyone tell me if they noticed the same? I don’t know if I have the wrong dipstick or something the factory screwed up. I’d like to ask if you guys can post your oil pressure readings at a warm idle as well as highway driving at around 2000RPM so I can compare and see if I’m reading a little high. I haven’t decided if I’m going to drain any out until I compare.

Wow, sorry to hear the issues. I did my first oil change in May at 5k. I drained the oil pan and cooler and added 7.5 qts And it was within the dipstick ban. With the dip stick down to 1/4 did you make sure the oil cap is on, the oil cooler plug and oil drain plug are tight and the oil filter is tight and that you removed the oil filter seal when you removed the oil filter? Some times the oil filter seal does not come off with the oil filter and sticks to the engine block. I always try the obvious first. good luck and maybe others have words of wisdom.

Yes I checked all the boxes, I’ve been changing oil for well over 30 years so I’m thorough. Can you tell me your oil pressure numbers? Please read my post again, I am not low I am 1/4” over the top of the waffle, so overfilled.

I have put 8 quarts in mine every time 25,000 miles no issues and its right a the top of the waffle so this sounds weird. Ill try to remember to check the oil pressure this afternoon.

At warm idle I'm at 35psi with the oil level 1/4" above the waffle (factory oil with ~1,100 on the odometer).

Much appreciated. I am running 37PSI at warm idle and I’m ar 67PSI on the highway at about 1900RPM

Oil pressure sounds fine. Ram recommends to check the oil 5 minutes after shutting off a fully warmed engine, so that's what I do to remain consistent. My last oil change took a touch over 7 quarts to hit the top of the range via that process.

The first time I changed mine, I let the oil pan, filter and oiler cooler drain for over an hour. 7.5 quarts (what the manual calls for) overfilled it. For my second oil change I measured 6 qt 22 oz to bring it to the top of the fill marks on the dipstick. And I check the level about five minutes after the fully warmed engine is shut off...and on level ground. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks all - looks like I’m fine, just threw me for a loop seeing it above the waffle looking like 1/4-1/2 quart over when I only put 7 quarts in it. I don’t have any issues or anything and my oil pressure seems to be just fine but I wanted to make sure and see what others have experienced.

I just got back from a check ride. 37 psi at warm idle and 68 psi at 2000 rpm. About a week ago, I drained 1/4 quarts because of a high level (measured cold). Checked it again (5 minutes after shutting down fully warmed up) and the level was very close to the same as cold.

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one, thanks for the info! I’ll let it ride with the 7 full quarts and just keep an eye on oil pressure.

An overfill as slight as that should not be an issue. However if you have an oil extractor (or want an excuse to buy one), it’s very easy to draw some back out the dipstick tube. Not ashamed to admit I’ve overfilled a vehicle or two in the past.

Well played - only a real man knows to recognize an excuse to buy more tools. I'm on it! Gotta find an extractor - any suggestions?

The oil expands a bit when hot, so always check it as per the book (like OnTheReel) said!
I run mine to the top of the cross hatch when hot.
1/4 quart under or over the full line, will not affect the oil pressure reading. When you are in the cross hatch, there is plenty of oil in the engine to properly oil everything, drain back into the pan and be picked up by the pump and returned to the engine. If the engine is clicking or knocking due to low oil, its too late! ;);)

You can also make a quick extractor for the dipstick tube with some small diameter vinyl hose, a jar (with a lid, cut with 2 holes) and your shop vac.

This is the one I have, bought it for inboard boat service.

I’ve seen similar ones at pretty much every tool/ automotive store too. They come with nice nylon tubes of various diameters to feed down the dipstick hole.

Thanks again guys! I appreciate it!

I just changed my oil too and had the same ordeal. I had 7 quarts in hand while waiting for an extra quart cause I seen places that say 7.5 qts too. I put 6 qts in, started up for a min, checked and ended up putting the whole 7th qt in. Next day I picked up my extra quart and check oil at cold and it was 1/4 inch over hash marks. Started up for a min and then it read 1/4 over the bottom hash marks. Ended up reading Manual and it said to get engine up to temp then turn off for 5 mins before reading level. I checked it then and it was filled perfect at the top of hash marks with 7 qts
